5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely High Quality, Bang for your Buck Bargain!, July 19, 2009
This review is from: Avid Single Digit 7 Bicycle Linear Pull Brake (Sports)
I just recently purchased a mountain bike which did not have a front brake installed. I searched around the web and found stellar reviews of the Avid SD 7 on [...].

Being a bit of a newbie, I was a bit worried at first about the installation. It turns out it was a breeze thanks to the simple, clear instructions that came in the package. Make sure though that you use quality brake cables as well to ensure the integrity of your braking system as a whole (Shimano XTR worked great for me.) I love the SD7 so much that I plan on getting a new back brake as well.

If you're looking for a high quality, low cost brake that has some serious stopping power, I highly recommend the Avid SD7.

These are priced right, work really, really well, look cool, and are easy to install. I am glad I bought these and would certainly use them again if I build another bike. They have almost as much braking power as discs--very impressive. I am now an Avid fan!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best 50 bucks I ever spent., January 20, 2012
This review is from: Avid Single Digit 7 Bicycle Linear Pull Brake (Sports)
After the brake pads wore out on my crappy Tektro brakes which could not hold an adjustment I decided to finally upgrade. After doing some research I decided to go with the Avid Single Digit 7 for the front and rear, and let me say these brakes are leaps and bounds better then the Tektros that most bikes come equiped with nowdays, build quality alone when held side by side next to the Tektros is much nicer, not to mention they actually hold adjustments. My bike stops on a dime! in fact if I'm not carefull I will endo with the front brake.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who needs discs?, January 8, 2012

I still had the original Avid 1.0 v-brakes on my '98 Trek 7000 and they were well beyond their serviceable life. Plus, the hardware was rusty and nasty. I didn't want to drop the cash on the Avid SLs and I figured the stainless steel hardware, Avid noodle with Overcoat, and better details of the SD-7s would be worth the premium over the SD-5s. Have to say I'm really happy with my choice. The graphite color looks great on my bike. The Overcoat noodle is a really simple idea but very handy - you can pop the brake open to remove the wheel without touching the boot. Also, I like that the centering spring screws are 3mm hex bolts rather than regular screws. Performance-wise, the SD-7s are noticeably stiffer than my original brakes. Aligning the pads was super easy and the instructions don't even mention a need to toe the pads in so I didn't and they're completely squeak-free. All-in-all, these were a solid buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars No squealing, March 15, 2011
The used bike I got had brakes from shimano that had reviews which were jokingly having a virtual squealing brakes contest.
There are any needless moving parts, less chance for the squeals. Red compound brake pads take care of the rest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality beyond just great braking, February 17, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Avid Single Digit 7 Bicycle Linear Pull Brake (Sports)
I bought these because I noticed that bad or even half-hearted reviews for these are hard to find, and while they tend to focus on the great braking these are also very nicely designed for setup. One of the things I hated about my stock brakes - and the Origin 8 brake I got to replace the rear brake - is that the anchors pinch the brake cable in a way that causes the cable to flatten and the strands to separate. It's not a huge deal, but makes the cable harder to work with when readjusting, makes it look bad, and makes it likely that the cable strands will begin to break into sharp ends to stab you when making adjustments. The Avid brake has a nice flat metal piece that the bolt presses against the cable in a way that securely holds it but doesn't really pinch or flatten it. It also has a post to hold the tag end against the brake arm. Sweet brakes for the obsessive compulsive rider.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!, November 18, 2010

My old brakes were Exage M400 canti's with Shimano STI brifters. I read a lot about these being some of the best V-brakes out there and I agree. The brakes come with a bunch of different shims that you can shuffle around to get the right fit. The graphite color is pretty dark so I didn't mind they weren't black. I bought the SD-7 levers and Shimano XTR cables. The combo works great. There is a lot of feedback so modulating the brakes is very easy. My old brakes, you would squeeze then squeeze some more till you eventually stop. These stock very quick. Too many stoppies started to loosen my headset.

I use this on motorized bicycles and does the job. I would upgrade the pads once worn down with koolstop brake pads that have dual compound. [...] are the bikes I use these brakes on.
