From Library Journal
This second entry in Avisson's "Writer's Reference" series follows in the footsteps of the first work, a guide for poetry competitions (LJ 9/15/97). Given the changeable nature of contests, the book does not present comprehensive guidelines but rather includes enough basic information for aspiring writers to be able to judge the nature of the contest and to contact the sponsor. The more than 350 (primarily American and Canadian) contests are conveniently divided into four broad categories: grants, fellowships, residencies, and mentors; major book competitions; chapbook or novella-length competitions; and short story or novel excerpt competitions. As a bonus, the book also includes sample competition guidelines, some useful suggestions for contest entrants, and definitions of competition-related terms. While it is handy to have this information in one volume, the material does overlap with listings in Literary Market Place and Writer's Market, two publications that will likely satisfy the needs of most libraries. Hopeful writers may want to consider this nicely done little book for their personal collections.AKathy Breeden, Univ. of Tennessee at Chattanooga Lib.
