Book Description

Understanding and avoiding fatal errors general aviators usually make. An insight into societal influences, group dynamics and the interplay of aerodynamic forces pilots do not usually fully understand. The book shows both the 'spider' and the 'web' in a rather enjoyable fashion as far as the reading journey is concerned. The 'scenarios' by no means resemble the rather monotonous 'I learned about flying from that...' Africa also has specific challenges such as legislation, pronunciation by air traffic control and occurrences where security paranoia can cause an entire airport to be closed - resulting in fuel and diversion crises, etc., etc.

Absolute essential for anybody flying but for low time GA pilots in particular. An ingrained safety culture can be obtained from reading this.

More About the Author

Johan Lottering (54) started as a boxing and athletics reporter and later as language sub-editor for daily newspapers in Pretoria, South Africa. He paid for his own flying. In the process of gaining experience he often inadvertantly pushed the safety limits. Having made a living out of charter flying, instruction, contracts in Africa and once at a regional airline, he'd seen the 'dark side' of aviation too. Johan has an ATPL, thousands of hours and flies over 100 types. He was the chairman of AOPA in 2007. He loves aviation and is concerned about his 'fly-buddies'. It dawned on him aviators would never be deterred. He therefore studied how recurring fatal flying traps could be avoided. The Learjet 45 is his ideal of beauty and performance, but he will go along for private flying safaris with friends to places like the Vic Falls, Namib Dunes or Okavango Delta in anything with wings.
