Book Description

January 28, 2009
Avoiding Injuries provides a unique perspective of outdoor injuries. Master outdoorsman Steve Priest's point of view of injuries, remedies and prevention, gives a flavor for the health concerns that come up in an active physical life. Injuries are something every outdoor enthusiast dreads. No one wants to think about them, but injuries are a fact of life. It is not a question of "if" but "when". However, the good news is that injuries can be prevented and overcome. Outdoor Activities such as running, cycling, hiking, skiing, triathlons, biathlons, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and canoeing and kayaking, increase the possibility for a sports injury. Read to learn what you can do - as Steve has - to minimize the frequency for injury, and how to handle the injuries once they occur.

About the Author

Steve Priest has a thirst for all-seasons outdoor activities that challenge his physical abilities. Running, cross-country skiing, biking, hiking, paddling, and triathlons are among the interests that keep him healthy, physically fit, mentally alert, and young. His outdoor pursuit began after a torn Achilles tendon, a resultant limp, and weight gain. He turned to physical activity in search of a stress reliever as well as a "body builder for the long haul." When trying to explain his enthusiasm for outdoor actions, Steve likes to paraphrase Thoreau's, "Discover I had not lived" with the expression, "Never say, 'I wish I had'." Steve does not want to rationalize having missed an opportunity to enjoy life. Personal and physical barriers of embarrassment, reticence, and other priorities are not justification for saying, "I wish I had." Steve has been a college professor and a healthcare administrator. He has written books and articles on information technology. These quests are professionally rewarding and intellectually challenging; however, they do not provide physical fitness. Steve's writings and lectures on 'Outdoor Play' enthusiastically portray the friendships, healthy lifestyle, and entertainment of the outdoors. Join Steve in sharing the values, challenges, and humor of outdoor incentives that are the cornerstone of his lectures and stories. Steve Priest resides in Bedford, New Hampshire with Catherine, his wife of many years. They have two sons and two grandchildren. More About the Author

Never say, 'I wish I had..." is an expression Steve uses as his motivator, and is expressed throughout his writings and lectures. As you read Steve's stories, let your body and mind experience the creativity of the wonderment of personal outdoor enlightenment and play. Get on your bike. Go hiking. Run. Ski. Paddle. Swim. Never say, "I wish I had ..."

Steve's outdoor emergence began while in an injured state: He had been a couch potato absorbed with the pressures and problems of work, and felt no commitment to outdoor activities other than cutting the grass. Taking time to 'smell the roses' was not a scheduled event, and surely exercising was not a part of his lifestyle. His outdoor enthusiasm started with the good fortune of tearing his Achilles tendon.

Born in Middleboro, Massachusetts, Steve received a bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineeringdegree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. After serving in the United States Army, Steve earned a masters degree in management engineering from the University of Rhode Island. Steve is a proud resident of New Hampshire, and its motto, "Live free or die".

Steve's wife Cathy and his two adult sons Shaun and Tim are his playmates for his outdoor enthusiasm. His granddaughter Madison and grandson Carson now join him to never say, "I wish I had...".
