Editorial Reviews

Book Description

Written in the warm and accessible manner of a knowledgeable girlfriend, this highly unique book is the first to enable women to evaluate their own risk of miscarriage and take steps to reduce that risk.

There are only four major causes of miscarriage, and targeted questionnaires help each woman clarify whether she might be at higher risk in any of these areas. Each cause is explained thoroughly but clearly, with the information and support women need to improve their chance of future successful pregnancy. This makes the book as relevant for women who have never even been pregnant as it is for women who have experienced miscarriage.

The book presents a detailed overview of miscarriage, dispels common myths, provides flow charts to help reveal the cause of any previous unexplained loss, and offers positive, practical options for action.

It is written from the patient's perspective, drawing on sympathetic case studies to introduce each chapter and presenting complex medical research in a way that is easy to understand. The reassuring and upbeat tone inspires a positive attitude, and the book enables each woman to identify the path that is right for her based on her unique personality and circumstances.

5.0 out of 5 stars Provides excellent understanding of miscarriage in readable form, August 10, 2006
I was impressed with this very readable book which combines up-to-the-minute science with true case histories to explain the causes of miscarriage. It is written in a question and answer format and allows a woman to measure her individual risk of miscarriage and to take preventitive steps to avoid it. The author had multiple miscarriages herself, and she is able to pass her understanding on to her reader. After researching the causes of miscarriage, and having two healthy children, she wrote this book. I recommend it to every woman to explain how our bodies work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, and a "must-read" for any woman seeking to become pregnant., March 5, 2007
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
Written by Susan Rousselot, a mother who personally undertook extensive research to learn how to minimize the risk of miscarriage after personally suffering one, and featuring a foreword by miscarriage specialist Dr. Mary Stephenson, MD, Avoiding Miscarriage: Everything You Need to Know to Feel More Confident in Pregnancy offers straightforward answers to difficult questions. Debunking common myths about miscarriage, such as "after a miscarriage, I have to wait six months before trying again", "I miscarried because I continued to exercise", or "I miscarried because I once had an abortion", Avoiding Miscarriage acknowledges that a great deal of miscarriages are due to chromosomal problems and other abnormalities beyond the mother's control, but goes on to outline what is under a mother's control and how to effectively reduce risk. Maintaining a reasonably healthy weight (neither obese nor malnourished), receiving immunizations against common diseases that threaten pregnancy, and eliminating (or at least drastically reducing) alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine are among the helpful strategies advised; also of note are Avoiding Miscarriage's recommendations for improving communication with one's partner. Highly recommended, and a "must-read" for any woman seeking to become pregnant.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read, one loss or five! , February 28, 2008

I found "Avoiding Miscarriage" to be an amazing book! It answered so many questions and helped me so much. I accredit most of my "recovery" to this book. I was able to move past most of my issues, and relieve myself of a lot of guilt and blame.
I found the combination of various stories and facts to be extremely effective. Readers are able to relate with others who have had miscarriages, yet learn so much! It was great for me after suffering multiple miscarriages to alleviate some of the fear of multiple miscarriages. I believe it would be wonderful for anyone with multiple miscarriages in helping them narrow down causes.
It also taught me to question my doctor. "Avoiding Miscarriage" gave me critical knowledge every pregnant woman should have to communicate effectively with their doctors.
My favorite section was "Understanding Your Partner." A miscarriage will certainly test a relationship, this section helped to restore my faith in my partner.

Other sections include

-Miscarriage Explained
-Miscarriage Myths and Misinformation
-When Miscarriage Strikes
-Assessing Your Own Risk, with an in-depth break down of all the causes and possible problems
- Understanding yourself
- Understanding your partner.
-Understanding your doctor
-Choosing your own path and
-ENJOYING PREGNANCY

A great buy and definite must read!
