2.0 out of 5 stars A long winded story that should have been a short essay.
Martin Krieg's story recants his recovery from a car accident that left him temporily paralyzed. This book would have had much better appeal if it were terse. Consequently, he fills in too many voids with uneeded detail that transforms a great short story into a book that is both long winded and boring.

Following seven weeks in a coma,AWAKE AGAIN is the story of one man's incredible journey from "total unconcsiousness" through fully conscious recovery to a position of elevated mental, physical, spiritual and emotional consciousness from which Martin Kreig currently lives and operates. The book is a celebration of the power of the human spirit to not only survive or overcome, but to excell. I totally love this book! I was immediately drawn in and could not put it down. Powerfully written, AWAKE AGAIN is honest, real, gutsy, poignant, tender, courageous, candid and inspired. It made me laugh. It made me cry. It changed the way I look at life forever. A must read for head injury survivors, those who love us and anyone who is mentally, physically, and/or emotionally challenged who truely believes in life without limitations, either self or other-imposed. AWAKE AGAIN will awaken you from the complacency of a " normal " existence and empower you to elevate your own consciousness on your personal journey to realizing your dreams. A powerful book. Thanks for you, Martin!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an engaging and inspiring book, August 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Awake Again (Hardcover)
In this engaging and inspiring book, Martin Krieg shares his heartbreaking experience of waking up in a hospital to discover that he was paralyzed, unable to speak or perform the most basic tasks. This book, though, is not about how to deal with paralysis. It's about how to achieve the impossible. The reader is impelled to examine his own perceived limitations and wonder if they actually exist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Difficult to put down., June 30, 1999

This review is from: Awake Again (Hardcover)
This engaging and inspiring book is about how to achieve the impossible. Martin Krieg shares his heartbreaking experience of waking up in a hospital to discover that he was paralyzed, unable to speak or perform even the most basic of tasks. Doctors predicted that the paralysis was permanant, but Krieg would not accept this prognisis.. He made the impossible happen. Readers will be impelled to examine their own perceived limitations and wonder if they acturally exist...... A GOOD book!.....Difficult to put down.

4.0 out of 5 stars An introspective autobiography on physical and spiritual recovery., December 8, 2006
This review is from: Awake Again (Hardcover)
Martin has written a brief, autobiographical sketch on how he managed to recover from a traumatic head injury through sheer physical and mental will. The book weaves self improvement, healing, and determination, and written against a backdrop of multiple cross country bicycle rides: both upright and recumbent.
Awake Again is presented in simple, accessible prose. The style may seem a bit pedestrian at times, but the story is genuine, honest, and candid. And above all, Martin's story is captivating. I read the book over a three day period because, in the end, his accomplishments are compelling, and we all have something to learn from him -- whether it be human compassion or the required inspiration to start that next long bicycle journey.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable book about a very selve absorbed man, April 5, 2002

This review is from: Awake Again (Hardcover)
I enjoyed this book, probably because I identified with the protagonist, although at times I found him whiny and extremely self-absorbed. His efforts at rehabilitation are laudable, although I would hesitate to call them heroic. This is especially true in light of the cause of his head injury which was an act of stupidity. Although I hope he came back stronger, his recovery is more penance than achievement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring: Filled with Love and Wonder !, August 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Awake Again (Hardcover)
The extreme challenges and discouragement that Mr. Krieg overcame to assert his Spirit's vision and determination are lovingly and compassionately portrayed in his marvelous book. All of us at some time in our lives feel dejected and at odds with the problem cards that we are dealt. I am the survivor of an accident with a automobile and my bicycle in which I was badly injured, so I could relate directly to how difficult it must have been for him. Fortunately I was wearing a helmet! I realized how much worse it could have been had I sutained a head injury.

He alludes to how important good attitude and courage are to everyone in life, and how important it is to give your best attitude and determination to everything you do. I particulary enjoyed the list of helpful and meaningful affirmations listed in the back of the book. This book is a must-read for anyone, especially those who think that life is rough for them. It is thoroughly encouraging and full of Love and Joy for Life - as is Martin. I have had the pleasure of meeting him on occasion. I most heartily recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful story for all to hear., June 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Awake Again (Hardcover)
Read it within two weeks of hearing about/signing up for the ride. Then I read it outloud to my then 7-year-old (Bryce). We both loved it. Powerful story for all to hear. I am thinking about giving it to my 80-year-old grandfather who just took a tumble over a railing and down two flights of stairs.
