Classic British metal, November 10, 1999

This review is from: Awaken (Audio CD)
Awaken is a record that has been cut with no prospect of awards or pleasing the masses or other such nonsense in mind at all. It is a slab of true HEAVY metal, and is, to be frank, outstanding. It has a distinctly British feel and is incredibly textured. Hark to the pulsing opening bass! Gasp as the guitars crash in! Whisper in awe at Darren White's haunting vocals! Among the treats in store for the listener are some very melodic acoustic parts, some fantastic (not to mention very gothic) backing singing by a truly gifted singer credited only as Ruth, some extreme heaviness fuelled in no small part by ex-members of Cradle Of Filth, and a track which sounds like Metallica's Orion, only with words. The album only fails to get a five-star rating by having lost somewhere a sense of direction. Instead of songs flowing from each other in a logical progression, the listener can't help but feel like they're crashing together, fighting for attention. All in all though, a terrific goth-metal debut from a now sadly-departed band.
