About the Author

Joseph Bernard, Ph.D. Counseling Psychology has been counseling for over 35 years. During that time he developed his highly refined skills of asking questions and encouraging his client to live more fully. He has explored the great western traditions of psychology and the eastern wisdom of meditation, mindfulness, yoga and tai chi. His clients have included: business professionals and leaders, championship athletes, those in recovery and people seeking greater well-being. He now specializes in assisting people to be more fully present in their lives; more aware, purposeful and peaceful.

More About the Author

Short Bio - I have spent the better part of the last 35 years helping people make sense out of their lives. My work as a therapist, teacher, presenter, workshop leader, management consultant, and trainer has brought me into the inner workings of all kinds of people including: addicts and alcoholics, competitive athletes, business owners, the criminal justice system, and many in search of meaning and purpose.

In the past my work has helped people heal, leave the past behind, move forward in their lives with purpose and help shift old stuck places into new and dynamic aliveness. Now I want to share more of what I have learned over these years of listening careful to the issues that often trouble people and how most of us even at our best get in our own way.

I use to go into banks after robberies and help the staff deal with the stress and trauma

I live across the street from the Pacific Ocean close to a small town on the Oregon Coast

I have lived in Portland, San Francisco, Vancouver British Columbia, Santa Barbara, Denver and Boulder and now on the Oregon coast

I am the oldest of six and have survived 12 years of Catholic schools

I developed an month long program for those with addictions that was totally based on creative expression

This is not just another "Book of Questions" but a truly meditative book that would best be used in conjunction with a journaling practice.

Every once in a while I come across a truly creative and powerful book. "Awaken: 100 Questions to Expand Your Mind and Open Your Heart" by Joseph Bernard is one such book. As the title suggests, Joseph poses 100 questions designed to live more fully, achieve more in your life and make a positive difference in the world.

Joseph lists 20 benefits readers will receive form exploring these 100 questions. One of the benefits is, "You will have a clearer sense of purpose and a greater passion for life." That's one of the reasons I really like this book. "Clarify the purpose and direction for your life and career" is the first step in my life and career success system. If you get nothing more than a clearer sense of purpose out of this book it will be well worth it.

But you'll get a lot more. Joseph suggests that asking and answering the 100 questions in "Awaken" will help you grow in insight and awareness, become more expansive and compassionate. For my money, a world full of expansive and compassionate people would be a great place to live.

Joseph has done something clever in this book. He not only asks provocative questions, he gives you hints to guide your thinking as you answer. For example, Question 5 -- "What is the source of your inner knowing and the messages of guidance you can hear inside of you?" - is one of my favorites. Joseph's hint to answering this question is..."What is the intuition, gut instinct, or the wisdom in your heart? In what ways do you receive your inner guidance - as feelings, inner voice, pictures or other ways of knowing? Could these messages be the voice of your soul?"

The hint was very helpful to me. Here's how I answered this question...My intuition helps me make decisions. I've learned to pay attention to it.

This book is interactive. If you are willing to really think about the questions, and travel the path the author sets up for you, it really does provoke deep thinking about who we really are. I found it worth the effort.

As a colleague and friend, I have known Dr. Joe Bernard for well over 30 years. It was with great delight that I read his new book. Joe has an uncanny way to take the many facets of a deep spiritual journey, and present them in a manner that is practical, highly useful, and easy to implement. He encourages us to take all the time we need, to be easy with ourselves, and to enjoy the journey. In short, Dr. Joe's questions and hints serve to gently awaken us to our highest possibility, and to come to discover our higher knowing and truth. He rightly knows that the only real truth is what you find within, and the only true knowing is beyond the confines of ordinary thought. Dr. Joe masterfully blends the best of cognitive psychology with spiritual practice and perennial wisdom, leaving the reader with a powerful experience that can change not only their life, but also contribute to the world taking another step in its conscious evolution. This book can help change things forever.

This is not just another "Book of Questions" but a truly meditative book that would best be used in conjunction with a journaling practice. Each question is a doorway into self-discovery and exploration, and could easily fill 3-5 pages of writing. Dr. Bernard was a guest on my weekly podcast, JournalTalk, and this book was the subject of our discussion. (Episode #8, to be released June 3, 2013 at http://www.write4life.us/category/audio-podcast/journal-talk/)

I purchased four copies as they make perfect gifts for people who are considering the practice of journal-writing for more clarity, passion, and purpose in life!
