Book Description

The thrills continue in Lori Adams’s addictive series of paranormal romance—the Soulkeepers—featuring the hottest love triangle in this life . . . or the next.

Sophia St. James has every reason to be happy: she survived the kiss of death from the seductive Demon Knight Dante and is free to be with Michael, her sexy Guardian Angel. She eagerly begins her Awakening to become a Spirit Walker and help lost souls cross over. But her training is fraught with setbacks, and Michael begs her to stop. The life of a Spirit Walker is far too dangerous, and he won’t be able to protect her.

Then Dante returns, threatening to drag Sophia to Hell so they can finally be together. Terrified of losing everything she has worked for, Sophia turns the tables on Dante, luring him into a deception that may get them both killed. The stakes climb even higher when Dante’s ally, Wolfgang, emerges from Hell with one order: kill Sophia. Will Michael once again be Sophia’s saving grace or will the Awakening give her the power she needs to save herself?

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Addictive Series - A Must Read! July 15, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
First off, I want to thank Random House Publishing and NetGalley for providing me the opportunity to review this awesome book!

Second, take a look at that cover! I absolutely LOVE the cover! It is so beautiful and practically begs you to open the book and continue the Soulkeeper journey!

Now, on to my thoughts.

Sophia survived the 'kiss of death' from Damon and is eagerly waiting to begin her Awakening so that she can become Spirit Walker, helping lost souls cross over. This is something that she really wants to do, but Michael puts a damper on things and tells Sophia that he does not want her to continue, declaring that it is far too dangerous. Sophia is having none of that nonsense and continues with her training with her awesome and funny spiritual trainer, Rama. She really is determined to become a Spirit Walker and she's not going to let anyone stand in her way to accomplish her goal. There was one point in the story where she was having a difficult time keeping up with her school work and her training, so she and Bailey come up with an idea to help in the matter. Not a good idea. Not. At. All! Nothing good will come from this action and I believed at the time that it would bite her in the butt later on, and if I'm right, it did. Of course with the cliffhanger ending, I guess we won't know until the next book. But despite all of that, Sophia's character has really shown some growth since book one.

Michael has been selected as a candidate for the Halos, so he is spending most of his time in the story training for the trials. The trials are tough and grueling, but Michael really shows he can kick some major butt. I am really frustrated with his character because he really changed, becoming controlling and possessive toward Sophia.

Picking up where Forbidden ends, this is a “must read in order” series or you will be hopelessly lost. Fortunately the masses of information for backstory are almost entirely provided in the first book, so this installment read much faster, and felt far more ‘of the moment’ than the first.

Sophia has found her destiny: she is to be a Spirit Walker, a sort of crossing-guard for souls that need to pass on to the afterlife. In this book, she is aware of and ready to assume her new task, and her determination and maturation are welcome additions to her character. After surviving a “kiss of death” from the hell-bound Dante, she believes she can now move on and take charge. And then there is her secret love shared with Michael, because he can’t be ‘involved’ with a human. And, her father is starting to return to the land of the living after her mother’s death, so she is feeling that things are starting to head in a positive direction. BUT…
Of course, this is a love triangle: Michael the forbidden one who spends his time alternately ignoring her or being absolutely adorable and Dante the former love from lifetimes ago who is willing to do anything to make her choose him and return to live with him in Hell. Yeah – choices: neither of them particularly wonderful. Add to that the questions about her new friends, her determination to achieve her own goals despite the dangers, and some true emotional upheavals that keep her unable to focus and concentrate and there is a giant ball of mess ready to explode. And, there is a cliffhanger…..
While I didn’t expect an ENDING sort of ending, I hadn’t expected such a major cliffhanger either…. Who has the secret that could uncover everything? What happened at the dance? And just what twists will Sophia’s experimentation with all things witchy bring? I’m ready to know now…

4.0 out of 5 stars Never a Dull Moment July 16, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
*I received an ARC of this book free from NetGalley on behalf of Random House Publishing Group – Loveswept in exchange for an honest review*

Awaken puts an interesting spin on angels, demons, and love triangles. To be honest I’m still not entirely sure who I love more, Michael or Dante.

Michael is an angel who shares a heart link with Sofia and I just want to love him, but sometimes he is so incredibly frustrating. He says he love Sofia, but he doesn’t always prove that fact…sometimes he does the exact opposite. Three little pulls is all it takes to let her know how he feels about her, and sometimes he can’t even manage that. But then there are times he’s beyond sweet and romantic. I wonder which is the real him.

Dante on the other hand is completely sure of himself. He knows he loves Sofia above and beyond anything and he’ll do anything to prove that once upon a time she loved him back. But he’s a demon who wants to bring her to Hell with him. He’s protective and sexy, but Hell…not too sure how strong a bond would have to be to follow someone there voluntarily. But dang, what that man endures to get back to his love. How could anyone not love him for that? I know I’m having a difficult time not.

Sofia is chained to the car of an emotional, spiritual, and physical rollercoaster. Things are changing between her and Michael and they’re not entirely good, and with Dante back in town there’s only so much she can handle. Unable to shut off her emotions her ability to concentrate on anything is tested, and she fails miserably. They also control her physical capabilities, leaving her feeling like a failure. Torn and confused she conspires to a new plan. Although I think her witchy decision will cause more harm than she anticipated.
