Book Description

Lucy Donovan was supposed to have a weekend of fun in the sun, celebrating her upcoming graduation from college. In a split second, everything changed. A drunk driver ended Lucy’s mortal life.
Lucy opens her eyes to a world she never imagined possible and a new destiny: as a Patronus, a guardian of spirits. Adjusting to her new role and abilities while negotiating this confusing realm will test her limits and push her further than she ever dreamed she would go. From wayward spirits who don’t want her help to soul stealing vampires, and even a stuck-up British royal, Lucy must brave them all to save one spirit she can’t bear to lose.
Further complicating her confusing life is an inexplicable yet growing connection she feels to a member of her team, Max, whose mysterious behavior leaves her both confused and intrigued.
Waking up dead was just the beginning of her problems. Lucy’s death is about to become the greatest adventure of her life.

Praise for Awaken:
"Awaken is a journey that will leave you gasping, laughing, and crying. A story about the ultimate soul mates. What's there not to like? If you give one chance to a new author this year, let it be this book." -- Best-Selling Author of Mortal Obligation, Nichole Chase
"I approached Awaken with some tripidation, but HOME FREAKING RUN!!!! If you could see me right now, you would see my jubilation at being utterly sucked into a new paranormal realm!" - The Indie Bookshelf

About the Author

Sarah M. Ross started her obsession with reading at an early age, getting in trouble for sneaking Baby-Sitters Club and Nancy Drew books into math class in elementary school. She would read any fiction book she could get her hands on. She knew it was an addiction when instead of grounding her from TV or music, her mom would take away her books as punishment (The Horror!). Her love of all things paranormal was inspired by her good friend Laurie, who convinced her that books with vampires, witches, and all things shifter were amazing. After a little reluctance, she gave it a shot with the Sookie Stackhouse books, realized her friend was right, and the rest was history. Ms. Ross grew up in Pittsburgh, graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in English, and taught 8th graders to love reading as much as she does for several years. She will always be a proud member of Steelers Nation, but couldn’t take the cold and moved her frozen tush to Florida where she now lives with her family and two cats. You will find her many days with her trusty Kindle in hand and toes in the sand!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read January 25, 2012
By PamM
Format:Kindle Edition
Wow what an absolutely amazing debut book. I totally fell in love with the original plot and remarkable characters. Characters that will have you laughing, cheering them on and crying for them. Yes this is a surprisingly awesome book that made me feel I was right along side these people as they battle supernatural beings, fall in love and have heart wrenching moments. Also look for some amazing side characters to pop in that leave you in shock over who they are. I only had one problem with this book. It ended and had me begging for more. Sarah M. Ross has written a book i am sure will be a favorite to many. I look forward to reading more in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read- Avid Reader & Teacher January 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm not going to review the plot except to summerize that this story takes everything I love about paranormal suspense and beautiful love to make a great read. Lucy is honest and real. She reacts like a normal person would when faced with conflict (emotional and physical). The supporting characters are integral and so fascinating that I want to know their backstory too. I enjoy a book that makes me feel emotionally attached to the characters. I laughed and cried while reading this book. I'm very much looking forward to book two.

5.0 out of 5 stars a really good read :) January 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Lucy is headed out for a weekend of sun, sand and surf before she graduates college. But not long into the trip a drunk driver ends her life in a horrific car crash. Weird thing is she wakes up. But what she wakes up to is not her old life, but a new one. She is now a Patronus and its now her job to help guard spirits until they are to go to their final destination.

Lucy learns that someone she was very close to will soon need guarding. So with the help of her new family; Cassie, Max, James and Adam help her train. Will she be able to protect this person and herself from the soul stealing vampires? Not only that, Lucy keeps wondering why she has such a strong connection to Max. Anytime she is around him, she melts. She thinks the feeling is mutual for him too until he starts pulling vanishing acts. Little does she know that there is history between them that is old as time itself...literally!

Awaken was such a good book. I laughed at times with this book (`crap on a cracker' is now a fav phrase for me) and I even cried towards the end of the story (my heart was just broken!) Ross did an excellent job with her debut book and I really look forward to more and more from her. And if you don't already believe in soul mates, read Awaken and you just might!

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth a Read May 17, 2012
By Carol
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book confused me. It reads like YA, both the voice and the writing, but the age group didn't match with the central characters all being adult.

I like the general concept of the book and found it to be unique in many ways. That alone was enough to keep me turning the pages. Also, I did cry at one point, so the writer certainly manged to tap into my emotions. The scenes toward the end were compelling and exciting.

The relationship between Lucy and Max irritated me a little. I understand that he didn't want to share his big secret, but she did very little to force his hand, basically falling madly in love without even questioning the reasons behind the instant attraction and emotional response to him. The reason left me unsatisfied. In a story where I found myself suspending disbelief easily to sink into a new universe created by the author, it threw me right out of the story. It wasn't what I was expecting at all.

The abrupt ending was another reason I didn't rate this higher. It felt almost as if the story was cut off without resolution. I'm all for cliff hangers but it felt as though there should have been another chapter. It was build up, build up, build up... the end.

All in all, I recommend this for older young adults who are happy to read up in age range. I will continue reading the series to find out what happens next.

5.0 out of 5 stars A refreshing new twist on the supernatural. April 10, 2012
By cm3
Format:Kindle Edition
First of all I am an AVID paranormal/supernatural reader. It is basically the only genre of books I like to read along with suspense and medical dramas. Since I read A LOT of these books I start to get jaded to the typical vampire/werewolf/zombie stories. I like a story that moves quickly, isn't overly descriptive and has characters that you feel are worthy of the time you are investing in them.

Sarah wrote an excellent new take on the afterlife. It's a direction that hasn't really been taken before and it's a lot like I envision it to be. Sure there are vampires and werewolves but there is also a terrific story being told about a strong young girl that despite the tragic events that have occurred, carries on with a fierce attitude and a will to do her best. The characters in the story mesh well with Lucy and her room-mate Cassie is my favorite. I honestly can not say enough about this book. I read it in one sitting during a bout with a cold, I could NOT put it down. Normally you don't find this type of intelligence written into the characters of a YA book. I love the witty banter between all the characters. The range of emotions that Sarah writes for these characters is astounding and you really feel the drama and conflict going on around them. I highly recommend this book. Take it from a "jaded supernatural fan", it's worth the read.

(I received this e-book free of charge for review purposes. It in no way influenced my review at all.)
