5.0 out of 5 stars Quantum: Superhero Book of the Century, June 22, 2009
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Awakening #1 (Quantum Prophecy) (Mass Market Paperback)
Everyone knows the classic super heroes in films and in our old comic books, but did you think that anyone could make a super hero series that can match that? In fact, Quantum is easily the best super hero book I have ever read because it was beyond exciting and the characters were so easy to connect with. From the first page to the last it was nearly impossible to put down the book. Michael Carrol does a great job of keeping multiple story lines going in the book, which wants you to know where every character is in the book. Also, the characters are so much fun to follow. Colin, the main character, is a fun but humble main character, making the book have a happy balance, while Danny is more of an good-evil character. Danny is easily the greatest influence to everyone in the book, so his bipolar way of justice is keeping the book moving just as much as everyone else.

I've never really read a book before. I'm interested in comic books and this is a great story about super humans.

When I first started reading this book, I was a bit wary. I was afraid it was going to be a knock-off of Superman or any other Superhero that I have heard about. But I found out that Carroll writes a different take on superhumans and villians, their powers and gadgets, public opinion, the good and bad, and all the grey area in between. I was also a bit worried that it might be a little too "out there" for me. I shouldn't have been worried at all. This is a fantastic action/adventure book! I definately haven't read a book like this before. It blended fantasy with adventure and mystery. In short, it was awesome. There are so many twists and turns that you HAVE to keep turning the pages. This book will keep you reading long into the night.

4.0 out of 5 stars X-Men for beginners..., February 17, 2009

This review is from: The Awakening #1 (Quantum Prophecy) (Mass Market Paperback)
I wanted to love this book. I really did. A lifelong comic book man like me WANTS to love a book like this. However, it did not work out that way.

All in all, the book was a fun read that moved pretty well once you got past the origin story. It just lacked that "ummph" that I was expecting. I had a hard time creating a mental image of many of the scenes described in the book. Perhaps it was just me though (I have no problem doing so in most other books). I liked the idea of the story and can see a likeable quality amongst the characters but right now there is just something missing. I do plan on reading it's sequals but unless something changes I don't think I will be dropping my comics anytime soon. I still need my superhero fix after all.

5.0 out of 5 stars i am loving this series!, February 7, 2009
This review is from: The Awakening #1 (Quantum Prophecy) (Mass Market Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book. I'm 28 and i thought it was very entertaining and i suggested it to an 11 yr old. He is about half way finished and he loves it. This book is about superheroes. They disappeared 10 years ago and there is a new uprising of them. You also find out why the super heroes from before disappeared. I thought this book was very good and i cannot wait to read the other 2 books.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great start..., July 23, 2009
This is such a neat start to a series, that holds a lot of promise.

It seems that one point in history, we had superheros and supervillians called superhumans. Then one day, all of a sudden all of the superheros vanish. Gone. Nowhere to be seen or found. What happened to all of them? Were they killed? Retired? What happened?

Then 10 years pass and some kids are showing signs that they could be superheros, but how did that a happen and what super powers could they have. That seems like people would welcome superheros back with open arms. You'd think that...but not everyone is pleased to have superhero's around, and will do anything thing to get rid of them. Even if it means to kill thousands of innocent people.

The only reason why I give this book 4 starts and not 5 is because of the language. It's not worse than a PG movie, but I guess I have a problem with language in books for kids. That's the only reason why this isn't 5 stars.

This is a great start to a promising series. This has a lot of plot twists, turns and fantastic characters and very good writing.

I highly suggest this series. I can't wait to read the rest of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars At first I was unsatisfied...., March 25, 2009
... but man, did this book rock! I only wish I had the third one already... but, alas, I must wait. ;-;
A full twist on superhero stories- like Harry Potter meets the Justice League. I'd recommend this for any teen between the ages of 12 and 22. Or... you know... weird adults who like to read about teenagers and their adventures. ^^

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, June 25, 2011

As a middle school teacher, I can truly say that this book is outstanding. It starts a little slow, introducing a lot of characters in the prologue, which can be overwhelming, especially for reluctant readers. (I forewarned my students, especially reluctant readers, to read the prologue, but not worry about trying to remember all the characters right away). My students devoured this book. I have nearly a dozen copies of the first book, and five copies of books 2 & 3, and I cannot keep them on the shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than awesome, esp for the 9-12 yr old category, February 8, 2010

My 9 year old & I are in a mother/son book club. This was our most recent read, and it was really awesome, so awesome that I bought the next 2 books for us all to read (dad gets in the mix too when he sees us excited about a new book).

This book is well written, exciting, not too scary. It's only drawback is the typical hero "good against bad" can be a bit typical, but this book is decidedly better than most.
