Editorial Reviews

Review

Ms. Sallinger has the perfect combination to make this tale exquisitely beautiful, touchingly heart-wrenching and hedonistic enough to keep your body on fire.  - Danielle, Reviewer for Coffee Time Romance & More

Awakening is a fantastic read. I really enjoyed reading about both of the main characters and found them very rounded and I could totally understand why they were drawn to one another. I whizzed through page after page of this book, desperate to know what happened next and how things would resolve themselves.  - Lucy Felthouse, BlogCritics.org

Ok so where do I begin with this book? I picked it up when I saw another author I enjoy list this book on her website. I figured 'Why not". The book is about Evan who refused to get over his dead wife even when he sees and falls for Claire. She herself is damaged from years of emotional abuse and physical abuse. When the topic of BDSM was brought into the book I was excited because due to a certain trilogy, I have been reading more and more of those types of books. I have found I personally enjoy BDSM the books but have found much better reading/authors then the above mentioned trilogy. This book ,however, surprized me because instead of the actual actions of BDSM it is telling you about the correct way to begin a BDSM relationship. The characters spend alot of "getting to know each other" and "trust building" before anything sexual really happens. I found this really refreshing because I enjoyed seeing an author show the "responsible" side of D/s building especially with the fact that people are flocking to this life style without knowing whats right and wrong. Evan was very conccerned with Claire being "green" in the lifestyle and not wanting her already damanged pysche to meet up with a bad person using BDSM as a way to abuse a young, naive girl. So IF you are looking for just a book of naughty BDSM sex, this maynot be the book for you....yes there are realtions BUT the BDSM aspect is very light in comparison to toher books out there. I actually enjoyed the refreshing look at the new popular lifestyle.

This was such a beautiful, eloquently written story of two people carrying a lot of emotional baggage - both trying to help each other heal....Claire - a woman trying to regain her self worth and her true identity and Evan - a still grief stricken widower fighting just about everything while guiding Claire to finding "herself"...Unlike most D/s stories, this one slowly developed - with Evan guiding Claire step by step by making it more of an emotional journey for her rather than sexual - Even though it was cut and VERY clear that S-E-X was on the front burner for Evan right from the start! (I wondered how long it would take him to wizen up): )---I would have liked to have found out more about Claire's abusive mother and sister...It disturbed me that a mother and sister would do what they did...I guess I'm wondering - Was the root of it Claire? Or did they cause her to become what she became? (I'm believing the latter) This story made me smile and made me sad at times---light BDSM with A LOT of emotion and passion!
You will NOT be disappointed...

On vacation I decided I needed a little light reading, during my exasperating search on Amazon I stumbled upon the Awakening. After reading 50 Shades of Grey everything seems to revolve around the BDSM. Sexual practices of bondage/discipline with seemed to be a little played out. The hott millionaire and the inexperience young virgin graduate... Yawn totally boring! Dont be mistaken though, this book does indeed have the same content in the BDSM department but for a mature couple. I loved the introduction of the characters Claire the newly single member of the book club and the heart throb Evan who is indeed the owner of the store. The author truly captures the growing lust between the two and I enjoyed the evolution between the them. They both had demons which haunted their desire for each other her with the ex boyfriend and him with his dead wife "situation". I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a quick read... and I am sure you would enjoy it

I received my copy from the publisher through NetGalley

This book could have been so much better. I liked the idea behind the story; two people dealing with past issues coming together and eventually finding a way to overcome what lies behind them so that they can create a future together. I just wasn’t impressed with the way in which the story was told.

For starters, the first part of this book dragged for me. I don’t mind if it takes the main characters in a romance – erotic or otherwise – a long time to actually get to admitting that they are attracted to each other. In fact, I love it when the build-up to the characters getting intimate is slow yet heated. I do however expect there to be interaction between those two characters, an aspect was rather lacking from the first half of this story.

The story has more or less reached the half way mark before Claire and Evan even start talking to each other. Up until that point they have been trying to ignore each other and Evan has been nothing short of rude and abrupt with Claire. All the reader gets to see are the angst-filled thoughts and feelings on both sides. I have to be honest and admit there were one or two occasions I just wanted to put the book away because the story didn’t appear to be going anywhere.

I had a few issues with the characters as well. Claire seems to be a contraction in terms. She has come out of a long relationship about which she feels guilty because of the way she behaved, has been unsatisfied with her love-life for as long as she can remember and has fantasies about a less vanilla – although she’s not aware of that term – relationship and yet she has, when the story starts, never touched her own vagina while masturbating? I guess it is possible, but to me it just felt unlikely.
