From Booklist

Though more predictable than Foster's tale, Benson's Awakening Mercy features a fresh, authentic voice in CeCe Williams. She's a young, up-from-poverty African American woman, an unwed mother who, through hard work and pluck, has established a career in real estate. Her personal life is devoted to her son, David, and she avoids men like the bad news they've been. Suddenly, CeCe is summoned to court for dozens of unpaid parking tickets--she was so busy, she forgot about them--and the judge sentences her to community service with Genesis House, an African American Christian charity working in one of Atlanta's most disadvantaged neighborhoods. CeCe finds herself counseling teenagers about careers and pregnancy, and she falls in love with the earnest young director of Genesis House, Nate Richardson. John Mort

4.0 out of 5 stars Awakening Mercy, August 15, 2000
Cece Williams has proven that despite an out-of-wedlock pregnancy she was able to finish college, start a career, buy a home, and be a responsible mother. Having suffered through the hurt and humiliation of her past relationship, she is determined to live her life as a Christian. She is prepared to do it without male companionship. Her experiences with men, even those claiming to be Christians, leave her believing that her life is just fine until she encounters Nathaniel Richardson, director of Genesis House where she is has been directed to report for community service for outstanding parking ticket fees. Nate has not dated since the breakup of his marriage four years prior. With his ex-wife's recent marriage he has finally realized it is time for him to let God have his way in his life. The guilt of failing is still with him when he meets Cece, but the easy rapport they share is a welcome change. The fact that she is a practicing Christian is all the more appealing. As he gets to know her he falls in love with her loving spirit as well as Cece's four-year old son, David. Ms. Benson paints a fine picture of the trials of a couple who must rely on their faith to make a go of a relationship in this 41/2 star read. She is just as a compelling writer in Christian romance as she is in contemporary.

5.0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING, November 21, 2001
By
I read this book this last week-end along with book two. Both caused me to search myself. Awakening Mercy made me search my spirit and think about what anger I would not let go. I felt the pain of Nate and CeCe. This book was a soul searching experience because it made me remember What God has for me is for and when a door closes there is a reason. CeCe had to realize what a caring person she had in Nate. She also like some many of us had to understand she had made herself a victim. Holding on to anger will cause us to see only our side of any situation. We make ourselves victims when we don't want to face our role in what happens to us. I was so happy when CeCe saw the light and heard God's voice. I loved the book and I am looking forward to Book Three...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, August 31, 2000
By A Customer
I really enjoyed this book. CeCe and Nate showed that you can have a beautiful relationship without over stepping Gods rules. Nate was so supportive of CeCe. No matter what he was by her side. CeCe proved that being a single parent didn't mean you had to give up your life. She was able to achieve a great career, buy a home and raise a child. Yes, she had to learn to forgive which would allow her to blossom in Gods gifts but she was great.
