5.0 out of 5 stars Read this book - if you love words and want inspiration
There is much talk about channeling these days, and many people who claim to be receiving words from otherworldly sources. 1.0 out of 5 stars The Pharaohs are spinning in their tombs!
The book is well-written, I'll give it that. While it is certainly more poetic than any other version of the Book of the Dead, it comes at the cost of all of the specifics and crucial information needed for success in the afterlife-- which is why the Book was written in the first place! The true poetry of the Chapters of Comming Forth by Day lies in the information...

This review is from: Awakening Osiris: The Egyptian Book of the Dead (Paperback)
There is much talk about channeling these days, and many people who claim to be receiving words from otherworldly sources. Normandi does not claim this privilege, but I suspect nevetheless that she was in receipt of divine inspiration when whe worked on this book. The usual translations of the Book of the Dead are hard to relate to and seem alien. This one is full of the most beautiful and poetic imagery you can imagine, with descriptions of Osiris's experience of life and love and death which touch the heart. The concepts and inspirations in this book are thoroughly modern and speak to our lives and times. And so it should be, for the story of Isis and Osiris and Horus and Set and Nephthys is as old as time immemorial and is still being acted out today in our world. If you love words and want to understand more about why we are here, read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational, July 23, 2000
This review is from: Awakening Osiris: The Egyptian Book of the Dead (Paperback)
This is definitely the most beautiful book I have ever read. Although written in prose, the text reads like poetry... the book truly does read like a spiritual text. This may sound a little fanatical, but I keep it with me most of the time, and read bits of it whenever I have a spare moment... It gives me a sense of communion with the ancient gods, and a feeling of wonder at the world and at the ancient egyptian civilisation. I highly recommend this book for anyone who needs to be inspired.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible book!, February 15, 2003

This review is from: Awakening Osiris: The Egyptian Book of the Dead (Paperback)
This is one of the most incredible books I've ever read. In this "translation" of the Book of Going Forth By Day (the original Egyptian name for the Book of the Dead) Ellis sings the world into existence and exposes the very depths of my soul like no other writer ever has. It is not a literal translation, but more of a contemporary reflection of what the various chapters mean, a very poetic, smoothly flowing meditation on "Becoming Osiris" and living life like the gods we are. If you've ever been interested in Egyptian thought or mythology, you will love this book!
I am Osiris. I walk between the two worlds. I am the maker of myths. I remember all that was and what will be. I am eternal, existing for the millions of years. When you see the sun, remember me, remember your Self.

5.0 out of 5 stars While not a literal translation of the BoD, Ellis manages to, December 29, 1997

While not a literal translation of the BoD, Ellis manages to get across the beauty and emotion of the texts. I would use it as a supplement to the Faulkner translation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, December 17, 2000

This review is from: Awakening Osiris: The Egyptian Book of the Dead (Paperback)
I have several translations already of the Book of the Dead, but this work is far more than that. If feel as if the author is speaking right to my soul, and built a bridge with words to a people that lived 3000 years ago, and a religious tradition that was rich and vibrant and filled with great mystery, power, and truth. Hers is a translation of spirit that is accessible to all who wish to accept it, and I believe the Book of the Dead, and in particular this addition, should be held up alongside the Bible and other sacred works as one of humanity's most revealing and inspiring works.

4.0 out of 5 stars good book, October 28, 2003
This review is from: Awakening Osiris: The Egyptian Book of the Dead (Paperback)
Awakening Osiris is a good book. Allay the question of the trueness of the translation and envelop yourself in the reading. The invocations and prayers, praises and prose are simple and fluid. The passages are down to earth at times and lofty at others. Enobling, the work is sympathetic to the contemporary soul. I read Awakening Osiris years ago and it still has a place in my heart and a well deserved home on my bookshelf among the more scholarly works of ancient Egypt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Splendid and lyrical,, January 19, 2001
This review is from: Awakening Osiris: The Egyptian Book of the Dead (Paperback)
A pleasant departure from the word-for-word translations so often presented. The author takes poetic license with the text, and turns out a work all the better for it. It is admirable in style. I have several translations of the Book of the Dead, including Dr. Raymond Faulkner's translation (which is also quite poetic), but this one was too lyrically beautiful to resist.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly awakening, June 5, 2001
This review is from: Awakening Osiris: The Egyptian Book of the Dead (Paperback)
Amazing transportantion through words to the land of Osiris. A poetic revalation of the Book of the Death, far from just a translation but the tale of the Gods, whom are awakened within the ones who believe. The book which gives life was beautifully represented by this enlightening work.

Awakening Osiris is one of the best books I have ever encountered. This is the only time I have seen an established spritual text interpreted with such feeling. Spirit resides in these words. All spiritualities will find a common thread here. Seek the book, The End Times too.

This review is from: Awakening Osiris: The Egyptian Book of the Dead (Paperback)
When I read this book several years ago, I found myself extremely drawn to the chapter on Becoming the Phoenix... And it has taken me this long to re-find the book, as I had problems finding it in my local library system.
