3.0 out of 5 stars Great way of life - marginal reading
I whole-heartedly agree with "Tom's" perspective - not new to ME, but could be of great help to someone looking for that missing something in their life - a very healthy, beautiful way of getting connected with life, the world, and the "higher power".

The writing on the other hand, put me off. I was somewhat annoyed by "Grandfather's"...

This has to be the best ten bucks I ever spent ! Based on Grandfather Stalking Wolf's vision to isolate and purify the common truths present in every religon, the result is a knowledge that will greatly benefit anyone, regardless of religion, creed, or belief system.

Using this book, one can unlock the secret to "being in the zone", and discover a spiritual existance - even if one does not consider oneself to be religious. Heck, even a game of golf can be a spiritual victory !

Good medicene begins here.

4.0 out of 5 stars "the simple truth", July 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Awakening Spirits (Religion and Spirituality) (Paperback)
I've read a number of the Tom Brown books, and this one is one of the most profound in terms of getting to the core beliefs, and explaining Grandfather's transcendance of religion and the material world. Some problems were that there was much left out(more than likely on purpose), or left unclarified, and also that the information was presented in a somewhat disjointed fashion. These were miniscule annoyances compared to the value and substance of the included information. Also, as stated in the beginning of the book, this type of knowledge does not translate well to the written word, but despite the minor problems, this is one of the most profound books you're likely to read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great way of life - marginal reading, June 4, 2000
This review is from: Awakening Spirits (Religion and Spirituality) (Paperback)
I whole-heartedly agree with "Tom's" perspective - not new to ME, but could be of great help to someone looking for that missing something in their life - a very healthy, beautiful way of getting connected with life, the world, and the "higher power".

The writing on the other hand, put me off. I was somewhat annoyed by "Grandfather's" voice in the book - did he really talk like an Indian you'd see in a prehistoric John Wayne movie or was that just for a special 'authentic indian' effect? Obviously Tom can't remember Grandfather's stories word for word so I have to wonder why Tom chose to portray Grandfather this way (perhaps he really did talk this way! ). Also, towards the end of this short book there was a "broken record effect". I started getting the feeling the publisher requested a specific number of pages and Tom ran out of things to say long before he reached that number! A bit annoying... sorry Tom (and Tom fans) - but this was my experience with the book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A life changing read., April 9, 1999
This review is from: Awakening Spirits (Religion and Spirituality) (Paperback)
For anyone who has at any time thought or said, "there must be more to life than this," this book is a must read--it can help you find a path to great inner peace, and instill within you a new sense of humanity and our relation to the larger world. The beauty of Tom's (ne Grandfather's) approach is it's simpliciity. Since I read this book and began to develop a new perspective on our society and what's really important in life I've been more successful in every aspect of my own life. It can literally be a transforming experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars life changing book, March 1, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Awakening Spirits (Religion and Spirituality) (Paperback)
This is one of those books that comes along and changes your way of thinking. The beauty of his system is it's simplicity. At a time when pagan pursuits such as shamanism, Wicca, and druidism are regaining their glory, it is great to see a book that cuts to the heart of the matter. Very highly recommended for anyone trying to find a higher path

5.0 out of 5 stars Awakening Spirits By Tom Brown, January 5, 2007
This review is from: Awakening Spirits (Religion and Spirituality) (Paperback)
As one reads this book they must seek the Grandfather's and Tom Brown's wisdom as an innocent uncarved block. This first half of the book tells the reader of how Grandfather acquired his sense of spiritual purity that flows through all belief systems. The second half teaches the reader of the meditation techniques that Brown teaches at his school. Anyone that is a spiritual person should read this book. Thanks Tom

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the Flaws, March 24, 2006
This review is from: Awakening Spirits (Religion and Spirituality) (Paperback)
Tom Brown is, quite frankly, a terrible writer. Had I not heard him speak live, I would have thrown this book away and written Tom off as a half-educated moron who thinks he has something intelligent to say about touchy-feely, self-centered, pseudo-spiritual mumbo-jumbo. Fortunately, personal interaction with the man tells me that he is far more intelligent than his grasp of grammatical and large structural elements of writing would indicate. His famed charisma and passion for what he teaches is sincere. His understanding of the human condition, the material and spiritual deficiencies of this culture, and the importance of re-education (as opposed to political movements, fads, etc.) are what make his message so powerful to so many people.

Awakening Spirits is, as I said, not the most well-written book I've read in the last several years by far. There are only cliché attempts and eloquent language, this style and structure is repetative, and there are nearly constant instances of places where another word or phrase would have been better used. Nevertheless, if the reader is willing to overlook these annoyances, as well as do some of the extra work required to understand what Tom is valiantly attempting to communicate, this book has the potential to reveal profound truths and offer a new approach to the world that is sorely needed in our day and age. The exercises are effective, and the philosophic principals can be applied to everyday life.

It's unfortunate that this book doesn't have the same power as Tom Brown in the flesh. The reader misses out of the convincing charisma Tom can give to his live students, and is required to take much more on faith. It's a lot to ask, but what's given is so great that I can't imagine anyone who takes this book as seriously as it deserves would ever regret investing in it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay, but not the greatest..., April 16, 2004
This review is from: Awakening Spirits (Religion and Spirituality) (Paperback)
Overall, the book has been pretty interesting, but I recognized a lot of stuff from other books I'd read that predated this one. I will say, though, that this book presents much of what is written in "How to Meditate" in a much simpler fashion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ever get "just a feeling" about something? Here's what it is, April 22, 1999
This review is from: Awakening Spirits (Religion and Spirituality) (Paperback)
Gut feelings, prayer, and that "sixth sense" are revealed and touched in this book about connecting our lives, our faith and our spirits. Not only stories but practical applications on how to, where to and why to pray and meditate. This is a life changer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book and a Worthy Buy, May 26, 2001
This review is from: Awakening Spirits (Religion and Spirituality) (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book and worthy of 5 stars but I chose to give 4 because this book is VERY SLOW to get interesting. An elder told me I should read this book to help me with my 'Sacred Silence' and this isnt discussed until nearly the end of the book.

The book tells of 'grandfathers' life and his quest for spiritual completion and of 'white man's' world and religion. The meditations given in this book is truly THE BEST I have found and for this alone the book is worth more than Tom Brown is asking!! If you are interested in Native American life and/or meditations and life mending tools.. then this book is for you!! BUT be aware that this book is VERY detailed and this is the reason the book is slow.
