Book Description

Despite being apprenticed to a Mage for several years, Farah has trouble performing even the simplest of spells, but she can do one thing most Mages can’t—she can control the elements.
Set in the medieval and magical world of Farthen, a land that has known more war than peace, the story is told by sixteen-year-old Farah, a loudmouth tomboy with no respect for authority. But her sassy attitude and fierce temper only hide her inner struggle of having no recollection of her past, and her fear of whom she may really be. Even with her unusual ability to control the elements, coupled with her talent with a blade, Farah cannot find a place for herself to fit in with the Mages, until she meets the Crown Prince of Farthen, Conrad Delvincourt. After seeing her skills, he invites her to join his own elite team of soldiers—the Guardians of Farthen. As the Kingdom of Farthen is on the verge of plunging back into war, Farah’s life changes drastically. The Guardians are sent on a deadly quest into the heart of Valstar, the dark neighboring kingdom ruled by an evil lord rumored to be immortal, and its legion of vile creatures and notoriously cruel warriors, the CidKnights. On her journey, Farah slowly recovers her misty memory and tries to piece together her shattered past, which leads her down a perilous road fraught with lies and betrayal. Forced to grow up, Farah learns the painful truths that come with the life of a warrior, and how loss, sacrifice, and death are realities, and it takes true courage to not give up.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading, but I'm glad I did ! This is an amazing story, with a combination of almost everything I love in fantasy. The characters are very attaching, the plot is credible, and come on... who doesn't love a blue cat-dragon :D
I can't wait to return to Farthen, so get writing the second novel ;)

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Read! August 19, 2014
By Cat
Format:Kindle Edition
I rarely write reviews for books but I really enjoyed this book and felt compelled to write one this time. I am no professional when it comes to writing by any means but I think this author has so much potential and I just wanted to offer a layman's perspective on some of the things that caught my eye, both the good and the bad, as I was reading.

The good:
1) To start off, I think this was the first book in many months to have kept my interest till the end. It was fun, exciting, and creative and I think it really speaks for what a talented storyteller the author is, as I don't normally gravitate towards YA books. The pacing and flow of the story was great, and there was never a moment where I thought it was dragging on and on unnecessarily.
2) I was also very impressed by the excellent characterization. Each character, and there were many of them, was fleshed out so well that it made me feel like I knew them personally and I got very attached to them by the end. It was also fun to watch the relationship between Farah and each of her friends grow throughout the book.
3) I was a little thrown off in the beginning because of the jarring use of modern speech in a medieval-like setting but somehow, the combination of the author's storytelling and characterization just made it work out perfectly. I was honestly shocked to learn that she had written this book at such a young age!

Now on to the not as good:
1) First, I think the book could've gone through another round of editing. There were sporadic spelling, punctuational, and grammatical errors in the first third or so of the book but then they became more and more frequent afterwards to the point where I could hardly finish a page or two without spotting some sort of an editing error.

I love this story. It feels like everything i could want in a fantasy/action book without ruining it. All the characters that you want to be are badass and the characters who you hate always get what they deserve. I also really liked the way Deidre was able to write a well written book without over analysing every little detail of a scene or action but still not giving us too little. This book is a star in character development. Even though it feels as if the beginning goes too fast it still gives a good enough pace to be able to watch Farah grow up without getting bored. This book also gives you something to always look forward to, whether it be wanting to know more about Farahs past or what cool characters you might run into next. There are a lot of cliche archetypes although they all have a background that sets them apart and makes them very interesting. This is a really fun book for anyone who loves the fantasy genre. I would encourage anyone who has 5 bucks to spare to give it a try, i got hooked within the first chapter check it out to see why!D
