Review

"Awakening Through Love is a root text in a lineage of applied social intelligence, offering us practical methods for cultivating our capacities for empathy and compassion--not in some remote mountain hermitage, but in the midst of life. John Makransky's wisdom will benefit anyone who yearns to become a more loving human being." (Daniel Goleman, author of Social Intelligence)

"The title here says it all. This very readable book by scholar-practitioner John Makaransky teaches us how to uncover and practice a boundless love and compassion that leads to 'awakening,' or enlightenment. The meditations originate from the Nyingma/Dzogchen tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, which Makransky has studied and practiced for twenty-five years. All the same, Makransky's heartfelt enthusiasm and the concrete methods he offers cross boundaries of spiritual affiliation. From a practical standpoint, Makransky says, any practice that undercuts self-cherishing will bring us closer to the 'pure perception' described in Dzogchen literature. In this sense, meditations on love and compassion are particularly potent, and Makransky promises that they will 'generate tremendous karmic power for progress in spiritual awakening.'" (Shambhala Sun)

"Awakening Through Love: Unveiling Your Deepest Goodness illustrates how people of all backgrounds and faiths can access the Tibetan Buddhist practice of compassion and wisdom. Each chapter includes step-by-step guided meditations. [...Author John] Makransky equally wants to communicate the heart of those traditions to non-Buddhists and ordinary folks, as he does in his latest book release." (Boston Globe)

"Awakening Through Love is an uplifting and joyful reminder of our human potential. As a manual for practice, it wonderfully supports our shift from a contracted self-centeredness to the profound expansiveness of connection with others." (Sharon Salzberg, author of Lovingkindness)

"Awakening Through Love presents a message of compassionate wisdom that is greatly needed in today's world. In this book Dr. John Makransky offers readers of all faiths and persuasions a profound guide to experience the deep and limitless love that has inspired and awakened Buddhist practitioners throughout the ages. Being both a learned scholar and an experienced practitioner, Dr. Makransky is well positioned to present the deep meaning of the Buddhist teaching to a contemporary audience. This book is an important contribution to the modern understanding of Buddhism that will serve as an inspiration and a friend for anyone who wishes to experience the great qualities of love, compassion, and wisdom that we all possess as our innermost being." (Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche, author of Medicine and Compassion)

"Awakening Through Love is that rare combination of fine Buddhist scholarship and deep meditative understanding. John Makransky has done us all a great service." (Joseph Goldstein, author of One Dharma)

"If 'All you need is love,' what does love need? How can we put love into actual practice, where it really counts and is often the most difficult? Perhaps there are no more important questions than these, and not only our happiness, but our very survival depends upon the answers. That's why John Makransky's book is such a treasure. He's that rare guide that you intuitively trust, leading the way through even the most dark and challenging places. At the end of his book we emerge wiser, lighter, and newly inspired to live the truth of our innermost hearts. Awakening Through Love distills the wisdom of Tibetan Buddhism into a practical manual for contemporary life. It's a must-read if you yearn for freedom, peace and healing, not to mention unshakeable joy." (Raphael Cushnir, author of Setting Your Heart on Fire and The One Thing Holding You Back: How Emotional Connection Breaks All Barriers)

"This book is an extended meditation on love, but also so much more. Makransky manages, in simple and straightforward words, to capture the essential insights of the Tibetan tradition, delivering it, as the Tibetan saying goes, 'into the very palm of our hand.' Written from the heart, it is bound to affect the heart of all who read it... Practical, profound and deeply moving." (Jose Ignacio Cabezon, XIVth Dalai Lama Professor of Tibetan Buddhism, UC Santa Barbara)

"John Makransky communicates a deep sense of Tibetan wisdom in an eminently accessible and engaging style. The book itself performs an act of attention, awareness, meditation and therapy. Reading becomes a transformative event. The writing is deft, compassionate and highly compelling." (Richard Kearney, Charles B. Seelig Professor of Philosophy at Boston College)

"A treasure of ambrosia-like wisdom, Awakening Through Love offers profound and clear instructions and meditations for realizing compassionate love, the essence of our pure human heart that awakens the awareness of universal peace and ultimate wisdom." (Tulku Thondup, author of Boundless Healing)

Lama John Makransky's book is an invaluable guide to becoming a better, more loving person. His advice--based on many years of teaching and personal research-- is direct, profound and practical. He teaches that love, patience and compassion are not inborn-traits...rather, the ability to love is a skill-- and he gives the reader specific meditation practices to do at home to become more skillful with love. I recommend this book for anyone--Buddhist or non-Buddhist--who wants to love more fully.

I've had the good fortune of learning these heart-opening, life-changing techniques directly from Lama John on retreats over the last several years. Now he has distilled the essence of the teachings in book form so that anyone, anywhere can put them into practice. That's great news for his readers and great news for the world. Many people make the serious error of thinking that human love is somehow antithetical to a life of meditation and enlightenment. Lama John shows how to use human love to open wide into meditation and enlightenment, and vice versa.

This book is essentially a manual for love - receiving it, giving it, seeing it all around you, and bringing it out in all beings and situations. You could spend as little or as much time on each chapter, as each section reveals more and more every time you read it. Awakening through Love could be a great companion to the many other books on your shelf, or it could be a first concise introduction to Tibetan Buddhism and some of its practices. Either way, it is A GEM!

Not only did this simple, heartful, step-by-step book bring me easily into a deeper sense of my own capacity for love and compassion, it woke up my understanding of how and why my Vajrayana practices work. But more than that, I can (and will!) give the book to friends and family of different faiths knowing they will feel right at home and will discover their own deep goodness mirrored there, waiting for them to ignite it, not just hope for it. I wish everyone would read this book!

Gratitude to trusted scholar and spiritual teacher John Makransky for translating and adapting these Tibetan practices for our culture and time. Little by little, these meditations change your life. As you become intimate with your own mind patterns, you learn how to act instead of react. Increasingly present to your own and others' difficulties and joys, you discover the dependably refreshing energy of love.

Profound yet practical, deep yet doable, this book beautifully conveys the essence of ancient Buddhist teachings in a way that is easily accessible, truly universal and immensely helpful to anyone of any faith or no faith at all. The step-by-step practices Makransky offers enrich, heal, transform and fulfill your life in a way hard to imagine - discovering your innate love and wisdom, connecting with your many "benefactors" who are already wishing you well, and sharing that infinite love with all beings. A truly amazing book - the kind you want to give to everyone you know.

The other 10 reviews for this book are all suspiciously 5-star reviews, during the same several days, in August of 2007. Whether or not they are authentic, I suspect these people are practitioners who know the author personally or through their community.

Having looked through this book, it seems to be a more secular practice of the Boddhisattva path. Learning to awaken that unconditional love by practicing lovingness in its many forms (through meditative practices) onto an increasingly large and increasingly unconditional group of people. You start with those close to you and slowly, over time, extend practicing the meditation of these qualities to people you are less familiar with and those you feel judgment for ('enemies'), etc. It's a gradual softening of the conditions of love and ultimately opens up that sensation of unconditional love that expands one's heart and energy in life. Life then feels incredible, always (seemingly).

However, I got the impression that this had something to do with Dzogchen, given that the Amazon description mentioned such. Dzogchen is a formless (abstract) meditation (visualization, etc) different than Boddhisattva training, and unfortunately this book does NOT cover that.

But all in all, from what the title/subtitle says, it seems to focus ok on it. I appreciate it's secularization since I think we need to disconnect the real meaning from the Tibetan culture/history/monasticism, which hasn't always been as rosy as we'd like to believe. Even the Tibetan sects have exhibited extreme 'conservatism' where they feel insistent upon their authenticity and the falseness of everyone/thing else, to the point of argument, hostility and anything BUT love.

Who doesn't want to become a more loving person? The love that's taught in this book you can learn to count on and the practices are do-able, even with short amounts of time available. You'll notice changes as you become more patient and open with yourself and others. Painful reactions melt over time as more truly loving responses become the norm. You'll be so grateful you bought this book and worked with it.
