Book Description

Hailed as one of the best books "out there" on codependence, Awakening in Time is transforming the way codependence is percieved and healed. A pioneer in psychological and spiritual approaches to addiction, Jacquelyn Small integrates ideas from the Twelve-Step recovery movement, Jungian thought, Western Mysticism and Eastern thought to create a path-breaking new synthesis. She shows that "codependece," rather than being a term that labels and limits us, is a spiritual crisis with a sacred purpose - and a spiritual solution. Awakening in Time includes exercises, ritual, and guided imagery and explores such unique and healing ideas as:

• Codependence and the shadow self: only by embracing harmful patterns and past hurts can we let them go

• The seven steps of dis-identification to release addictive behaviors

• How codependent urges - the urge to control, the urge to excite, the urge to merge - can be transformed into positive spiritual powers

• Heartwork: the process of opening to one's unique creativity, the ultimate healer of codependence.

Reading Awakening in Time, we find ourselves imbued with the seeds of transformation that open us to the innate possibility that we can create lives free from addictive patterns of behavior. We can walk through - then beyond - past hurts that are keeping us stuck in limiting views of ourselves, our relationships, and our everday world. Now, with eyes and hearts wide open, Jacquelyn's words inspire and guide us right to the precipice of our dawning new future. There it is up to each one of us to step out and embrace the greatest mystery of all, our own Soul's purpose...

Editorial Reviews

From Kirkus Reviews

Small is a former addictions therapist now practicing ``transpersonal psychology,'' a New Age psychotherapeutic approach that combines a cornucopia of ideas and techniques. Here, with all due respect to the codependency and addiction theorists, she asserts that they have not gone far enough: They have labeled the problem, she says, but failed to offer a way to get beyond it, thereby instilling a sense of helplessness, shame, and defensiveness in some of their adherents. Small's aim is to outline a program of self-realization, beginning with the idea that codependency--giving away one's power to a person, an addictive substance, an organization, whatever--is not a shameful feeling but an impulse, however misguided, to ascend to a higher reality, an important first step in learning how to live and love authentically. Using the ancient theory of seven chakras, or energy centers, ascending the spine and influencing spiritual and psychological development, she explores the characteristics of each chakra, its developmental stage, its potentials for growth, its imbalanced codependent manifestations. Small offers a four-point plan for spiritually healthy living, composed of meditation, inner work (exploration of issues holding one back), study, and service (finding one's place in the world). Guided imagery exercises offer the reader the way to practice what Small calls ``heartwork,'' rather than simply processing these ideas through the mind. Many will find Small's contribution to the literature of ``new paradigm'' psychology compassionate, provocative, practicable, and refreshingly unpretentious. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. 5.0 out of 5 stars A Book To Experience, February 2, 2001
By A Customer
When I impulsively bought J. Small's Awakening In Time over five years ago, I had no idea it would become (and continues to be) such an important vehicle of self-realization for me. The guided imagery exercises are powerful tools for growth, understanding and connecting with your higher self. If you are truly opened to finding answers to who you really are, I suggest this book for your unforgettable journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, March 20, 2000
By A Customer
Ever wondered how psychology and yoga are related? I have. J. Small clarifies the relationship very well. Not much information is available on transpersonal psychology. On that subject, this book is the most comprehensive and easy to read that I have seen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on relationships and personal growth!, January 12, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Awakening in Time : The Journey from Codependence to Co-Creation (Paperback)
This book is perhaps one of my favorite books on personal growth and interpersonal relationships. It integrates many theories of psychology and philosophy to help us develop more wisdom, care, and true strength of mind. This book has helped me understand myself immensely and I am very grateful to the author for this. If you are into books that integrate theories as well as the various fragmented parts of yourself, I also highly recommend the book "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato. It is a an incredible book that will enlighten you incredibly! Your life will not be the same after reading it!
