Author Ed Rubenstein allows Dillon, a seventeen year old young man, to tell his story of confusion, anger and searching to stumble through life after losing his abusive father suddenly only to find a new mentor in Grandfather. The experiences are really believable from Dillon's almost being arrested for robbery to his grand escape to the mountains for the summer. There he is exposed to Sage, the husband of a friend of his mother's who is called Grandfather, due to his age. His wisdom shows along the way during summer experiences related to the reader by Dillon.
Never preachy, the story flows from Dillon learning there are some principles about life that might help him. Like most people of any age, he is not sure that he wants to learn how to make life a better trip or learn insights that might cause him to become more responsible. The reality of the relationship between Grandfather Sage and Dillon is fun to observe, while lessons about life's solutions are taught so evenly that one finds Stillpoint a place we have wanted for ourselves.
Descriptions of the mountain cabin and the surrounding area paint a comfortable place for Dillon's explanations about what he is experiencing. You are along for the summer, or at least parts of it. It is a nice vacation for anyone wanting to spend a little time reflecting on the lessons learned so far spiritually in their own lives and hearing or feeling Gramps guidance.
An excellent book for self-reading, and then as a gift to teenagers and adults. What wonderful discussions will spring from An Awakening From the Trances of Everyday Life.

New Awareness Booknews
Following the death of his father, Dillon is involved in a drunken auto accident that proves fatal to a close friend, and is sent by his mother to the country to recover. There he works to help Grandfather Sage, a man possessed of the kind of basic wisdom that would do us all a world of good in our moments of greatest pain and opening. An Awakening from the Trances of Everyday Life : A Journey to Empowerment reveals, through their dialogue, how to recognize and wake up from the emotional patterns or "trances" that keep us from "finding a deeper level of harmony" within ourselves. The story reaches out to touch our hearts, while stimulating our minds to do the work that allows us to "become conscious of the connection between our individual existence and the sacred fabric of life". Within the context of a young man's coming to spiritual consciousness, readers are gently presented with an understanding of how to connect with our true self, maintain flexible boundaries, choose! to create without attachment, and awaken into the awareness of the present moment. In An Awakening, Ed Rubenstein has given us a gently enlightening and reassuring tale of recovery and the discovery of one's true self. The conversations between Grandfather Sage and his student, Dillon, pave the way to this young man's awakening to a deepened understanding of his own best path to wholeness.

Simple, gentle, yet powerful,

This review is from: An Awakening From The Trances of Everyday Life: A Journey to Empowerment (Paperback)
Remember 17? Remember the confusion, the insecurity? We could only pick at our wounds--we had no idea how to heal them. This story of a young man's awakening in his 17th summer would make a beautiful gift for any rite of passage in a young person's life. And at 50, I find it equally valuable for my own rites of passage. Even those of us who might claim a certain amount of spiritual sophistication find much to feed our souls in this book. I have given copies to all of my most cherished friends, and to anyone I know who works with young people. This book has the potential to radically alter the lives of those who not only have not yet found their center, but do not even know they have one. How wonderful if it were part of every curriculum!
