Stan Getz, Bossas and Ballads: The Lost Sessions

Verve Records announces a major find, a previously unreleased session of vintage work by Stan Getz, one of the giants of jazz history. Bossas and Ballads: The Lost Sessions was recorded in March, 1989, and produced by Getz's close friend Herb Alpert. Backing the celebrated saxophonist is his longtime partner, pianist Kenny ... 5.0 out of 5 stars Get Getz! Immensely Enjoyable October 14, 2000
Format:Audio CD
Verve deserves high praise for this superb production: It is a model of what a re-release should look and--especially--sound like. The remastering of the songs (from a 1957 Getz quarter, including Leroy Vinnegar on bass, Stan Levey on drums, and Lou Levy on piano) is just right, neither over polished and cold nor timid. The photos, liner notes, commentary and alternate takes all enhance the enjoyment of the CD.
This is the pre-bossa nova Getz, and he's simply magnificentjust here: His beautifully resonant sax is smooth and lyrical, as expected, but hits the deeper shades of the spectrum as well. Excellent accompaniment by all, especially Lou Levy on piano. An all-around excellent production; you'll love this CD.

Stan Getz, who died about nine years ago, continues to be amazingly prolific!
Verve has triumphed yet again digging another West Coast Jazz Classic out of the vaults and cleaning it up with a 20-bit remix.
Sparkling, complex, mostly up-tempo arrangements. This late 50's CD sounds a lot like Stan's 80's work. Best tunes include "Smiles" (there are smiles that make you happy...), "Where or When".
Similar to "West Coast Jazz" and "The Steamer". Jazz's greatest saxophonist may be gone, but his legacy continues to astonish. Stan Levy, Getz drummer on this date is quoted as saying "He (Stan) had no limits; he could play anything. The horn was an extention of his head. There were no barriers, the music just came out".
So come hear Jazz's most beautiful sax sounds come pouring out of him like a bubbling happy waterfall. Warm, and up-beat. For best results, listen on vacuum tube equipment, as it was originally recorded.
by MY rating system, a clear Three & 1/2 stars, maybe four! END

5.0 out of 5 stars It Really Is An Award Winner! October 31, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
"The horn was an extension of his head. There were no boundaries (the mus-
ic) just came out". As part of the liner notes, this would be fellow bandmate Stan
Levey's succinct appraisal response for the gifted historic artistry that Stan Getz
brought to jazz, which earned him the name `The Sound'. Levey, an East Coast
session drummer who had played in his early quartet and later rejoined his band
in 1956, was right on the mark when he made this statement and the same thing
can be said about Award Winner, released in 1957, for which the tenor sax giant
perform with world class honour and timeless excellence. Backed with a stirring
track set that consists of alternating cool notes, swinging ballads, and simmering
low-key grooves, they contain plenty more lyrical takes on standards, like Where
Or When, Time After Time, But Beautiful, This Can't Be Love, a high-octane ver-
sion of All God's Chillun's Got Rhythm and Smiles--another classic composition
penned by Getz). This is a similar listening experience from his quartet-led effort
that is done in a way as Getz kept things in alternately cool form as the swinging
ballads and simmering low-key grooves contributes to both the uplifting interplay
and straight-up virtuosity. So once again he plays with fiery force and up-tempo
brilliance as Award Winner showcase another timeless experience, and digitally-
remastered in it's expanded format this masterwork sounds even better where it
feature a complete inserts take on Dizzy Gillespie's Woody `N' You and some of
some of his finest improvisations on record.
