4.0 out of 5 stars Crying, it's OK!, March 13, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Aware Baby: A New Approach to Parenting (Paperback)
This book has been a godsend for me. It came to me at a very difficult time in my daughter's first years, and it allowed me to see that, really, sometimes she just needs to cry. It gave me the courage to allow her to cry without trying to stifle the emotions she was expressing. Now, I buy it for anyone I know who is embarking on parenthood

5.0 out of 5 stars The ONLY parenting book needed, February 24, 1999
This review is from: The Aware Baby: A New Approach to Parenting (Paperback)
Dr. Solter gives THE answer to most, if not all of behavioral issues parents come across. It makes such perfect sense now why children act the way they do and how to solve any issues that come up. Raising a child who doesn't suppress feelings is an amazing concept. In this day and age with all the programs geared at getting adults to express feelings in a healthy way and stop suppressing with alcohol, drugs, food, spending.....Dr. Solter's books are the answer to PREVENT ever needing such intervention. This book was the start for me and my daughter and I recommend it highly, along with her other books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Extremely clarifying, May 23, 2000

I've been mother for the first time, and I had twins. I found this book very clarifying, because Ms Solter allowed me to see simple things that were just in front of my eyes. Babies are much more natural and insctintive creatures than we think, and I found her statements about their needs and ways of commmunication to be very rationale, simple and logical.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this if you are in any way involved with children., September 1, 1998

This review is from: The Aware Baby: A New Approach to Parenting (Paperback)
Her approach to raising children is very exciting and insiteful. This book tells of a concept that is at once simple and very profound about the needs of human beings and how we can meet those needs in babies. Ms. Solter has not gotten her concepts out to the media, so there is not a lot of recognition of her work, however, I believe she has gotten to the core of what causes children to shut down to themselves and others and shows us how we can positively effect the psychological and emotional growth of a small child. If her concepts were recongnized by more people I think it could have a profound and positive effect on how we interact with all children.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Aware Baby, September 24, 2004

This review is from: The Aware Baby: A New Approach to Parenting (Paperback)
When I first discovered and read The Aware Baby, my second child was 6 months old and my first child already 3 years old. The book answered nearly every question I had agonised over during my first few years as a mother. It is full of well-researched and honest information about babies and their legitimate needs. After reading The Aware Baby and Dr Solter's other two books (Tears and Tantrums and Helping Young Children Flourish), I remember walking down the road with my two children feeling absolutely liberated. For the first time since having children, I was not anxious or frustrated or worried about whether I was `doing the right things' at every juncture.

I wished I had heard of Dr Solter's work before; that someone had recommended these three books to me earlier, because in my opinion every parent or parent-to-be would benefit from reading her work. I felt that every mother (and father) in every maternity ward ought to be given a copy of The Aware Baby to read!! It is such an important book, and one which is full of support for parents. In a world where babies and infants are so often misunderstood, and consequently so often suffer (even with the best intentions in the world), it offers clear and intuitively sound advice in an otherwise confusing sea of information.

Put simply, this book tells the reader about babies' emotional world and needs, and how to care for and meet those needs, and thus how to care fully for your child. It is easy to read, easy to understand, practical, and will remain useful as a reference point throughout your baby's development. The book has a clear, easy-to-follow structure and good referencing, which builds on sound academic studies. I have found no other book that covers the issues of babyhood and parenthood so simply, directly and informatively. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
