Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS—This short concept book hammers home the message that a child's loved ones will inevitably return. "You go away…and you come back." This point is reiterated over several paired scenes. In each one, frowning youngsters are shown as someone prepares to leave. Next, the same characters are smiling as they are all reunited. This title was originally published in 1976 with different artwork. This version features a diverse cast, depicted in a flat, simple style. An additional title for large collections or where the original is in need of replacement.—Laura Butler, Mount Laurel Library, NJ

From Booklist

First published in 1976, this title quickly became the picture book of choice for helping children deal with separation anxiety. The repetition of the words "You go away. You come back" in various forms gives parents and caregivers a reassuring way to talk to toddlers about separation. Those six little words, repeated for reinforcement and illustrated to show familiar situations--parents going to work and returning, going on a trip--communicate better than paragraphs of parental explanation, perhaps because the simplicity of the text perfectly suits the target audience. Now reissued in a larger format with bright, clearly defined line-and-watercolor illustrations, this picture book will be a welcome addition (or replacement copy) for collections serving young children. 5.0 out of 5 stars Add this to the International Adoption list!, September 25, 2001
This review is from: You Go Away (Concept Books (Albert Whitman)) (Hardcover)
I loved this book! It was very simple but straight-forward. We began reading it to our son when he was 2.5 years old, in preparation of our 2nd adoption (when we'd leave him for about a week to travel to Europe to bring home our next child). We'd personalize it by saying when Mommy and Daddy go away, we come back -- when you go to Aunt Jill's, you come back.

Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Snaps for Dorothy Corey!, November 8, 2005

This is an amazing book for young children, to educate them about leaving. Almost every child is afraid at some point that their parents won't come back for them when they go away, and this is the perfect book to help deal with it! I especially love the wonderful illustrations and the simple words that make the book perfect for young children. It is also very good at portraying various races instead of just caucasians like many of America's picture books. An all-around good book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Go and Come, October 18, 2000
This review is from: You Go Away (Concept Books (Albert Whitman)) (Hardcover)
The author has written a book that helps children learn that going away from their care-takers is not something to worry about, because they will be coming back. The illustrator has done an excellent job is show real-life pictures. A great book to read with children.
