5.0 out of 5 stars Really just an awesome cd!
Now this cd is overall slower than The Better Life, but that doesn't mean its worse. Like they say in the DVD. there is much more production put into this one. The lyrics are all very good and express a lot of different feelings through the cd. Here is what I think of each song:

1. When I'm Gone - 8/10 Good song, nice solo. Pretty catchy
2. Away from the Sun-...

3.0 out of 5 stars Away from the Sun
Being inspired by the energy of the debut album, I certainly was expecting alot from this one. Unfortunately this album lacks that intensity of the first album. There are a few good songs on the CD but if you are expecting anything like the first album, you are going to be disappointed.

8. Dangerous Game - 9.9/10 Another great song, starts slow but then picks up, really awesome chorus

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome, December 23, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Away from the Sun (Audio CD)
To take a CD like "The Better Life" and make a sophomore album off of that fanbase is a very difficult thing. I, being a previous 3 Doors Down fan, was severly awaiting the release of this installment for my collection for a long time. When, finally, I heard the song "When I'm Gone" on the radio for the first time, I knew the wait had not been in vain. On "Away from the Sun" they use "When I'm Gone" and then their title track to intensify the album right off the start. Then they go from track to track, mixing it up from an almost ballad-like song, "Here without You" to harder songs like "Dangerous Game" and "Going Down in Flames." All of the songs have the catchy and addictive nature that ruled their premiere and have a much more mature nature to them. Simply Awesome

5.0 out of 5 stars Took it to a new level, January 4, 2003

This review is from: Away from the Sun (Audio CD)
This album is a lot more mature than the debut 3 Doors Down album. The guitar licks are more complex, the lyrics are more masterful, and the songs just have more "umph" to them. This album delivers in every way imaginable.

The title track, "Away from the Sun" is a favorite of mine. What a beautiful song. It gave me goose bumps the first time I ever heard it. Not too many song will do that to you. Other standout songs on the album include, "Going Down in Flames", "Changes", "Ticket to Heaven", "Here without You", and "When I'm Gone". I'm truly blown away by this album. It's really an incredible album. Check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, December 23, 2002

This review is from: Away from the Sun (Audio CD)
While Kryptonite keeps being their best song ever, Away From The Sun has enough material that's as much brilliant as most off their first album.

When I'm Gone, the first and successful single from the new album, attracts the attention from the very slow beginning and makes itself highly memorable thanks to incredibly catchy chorus. The signiture style of 3DD and their songwriting talent are both here and leave no noubt the guys happily go on with creating a good music.

The lyrics are their strong side, as before, and this time the words do a lot to help liking most of songs on the Away From The Sun. Really meaningful, thought-provoking, and not so depressing.

Going Down In Flames could be their next single, very easily, since that's one of their catchiest tunes from the both albums. This is almost a pop song, but in the best sense.

The list of other stand-outs would include: Changes, Here Without You, The Road I'M On, Dangerous Game, and, surely, This Time, the hidden track.

The rest is still good, but rather sounds usual.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent album, though a little more subdued, November 13, 2002

3 Doors Down return with almost 3 years between their first album "The Better Life" and this one. I was hoping for another album as electifying as the first and in that I am a little disappointed in "Away From The Sun". It's not that the new album is bad because it isn't. It is good, but there are no stand out tracks like "The Better Life" had.

The first single "When I'm Gone" is a good song, but is not as good as any singles off of the first album. And it seems that this song as well as most of the other songs on the album follow the same formula - a mid-tempo beat, acoustic intros and verses followed by a thundering chorus, then repeat. Simply put, it seems that they've followed the "Loser" template for most of this album. They're all decent songs, but it would be nice for a little more variety.

Yet even with the songs being more formulaic, there are no bad songs and there will probably be a few hits, especially with one or two of the ballads. But those looking for the electicity and variety of the first album may be a little disappointed. It is not until perhaps the later portion of the album when things heat up a little bit with a couple of faster, harder songs.

One thing I have noticed though is if you listen closely to many of the songs, you can hear some good intricate guitar work interlaced throughout. In that, it seems that the guitarists have improved from the last album. It would stick out more perhaps if the tempo and style of the songs themselves had more variety througout the album.

Brad Arnold seems to be in good form with his singing, though he doesn't really have a voice that stands out from most other bands that are popular in this current musical environment.

Basically, it seems that 3 Doors Down have settled on a certain style and sound and they've elected to stay within those parameters on this album. What they've created is an album that is pleasant to listen to, though not really challenging. They seem to have chosen a safe road for this release and I hope that in the future that they liven things up a little more.

4.0 out of 5 stars A strong second coming, November 18, 2002

How does a modern rock band such as 3 doors down top themselves , whos debut cd includes such big hits as Kryptonite, Loser, If I could be like that? By trying to out-do themselves with another album full of infectous, singable choruses, that are full of crunching guitars. However, their effort may not be up to what the true 3 doors down fans hoped for. Its hard for any band whos debut cd had so many popular songs, to try and please everyone's taste. The first cd had more distorted guitar driven songs, while the more mature sounding "Away from the sun", has a more acoustic feel to it. The hard hitting choruses are still there, so if thats what your into you will not be let down. This is still a very sound, and catchy cd that will appeal to many rock fans who enjoy good straight up rock and roll without any suprises. In this day of age where there are many so called "rock" bands out there, 3 doors down stays true to the style that made them an overnight success.

5.0 out of 5 stars Philosophy meets Rock and Roll..., January 6, 2003
This review is from: Away from the Sun (Audio CD)
There's nothing like getting fresh music in the house. The old favourites are played time and again to a constant level of enjoyment, but a fresh batch of well-written tunes does wonders for changing one's mood and general out-look on life. It was the German philosopher, Fredric Nietzsche, who once wrote, 'By means of music the passions enjoy themselves.' And with the arrival of ~Away From the Sun~ the passions in this house, at least, have enjoyed some exceptional moments.

Since their explosive debut album, 'The Better Life', many fans have been waiting with baited breath for this second instalment. And a few people, including myself, wondered how these Mississippi boys could possibly top it...well they didn't exactly top it, but ~Away From the Sun~ is a collection of mature songs with the band's exceptional lyrical ability. I would call this CD, 'Philosophy meets Rock and Roll' because most of the lyrics have something meaningful to say about life. Take for example, track 5, 'Running Out of Days' - this is a theme or notion that hits us occasionally when we come to realise our own mortality. Life is short, and it seems to speed up the older we get...and it's sometimes those little things in our lives, the details of the day to day, that unfortunately takes-up so much valuable time. As the song says, 'They all create a haze.'

Included with the music is a DVD of video footage of some classics from their first album and the making of ~Away From the Sun~. This is great added value as we get the opportunity to see the boy's in action. Purchase this well-crafted album and let the passions enjoy themselves.

4.0 out of 5 stars 3 Doors Down definitely strikes gold again!, November 14, 2002
This review is from: Away from the Sun (Audio CD)
After creating an incredible cd like The Better Life with great hits like Not Enough, Be Like That, So I Need You, Better Life, and of course Kryptonie and Loser, one would think that a rookie band like 3 Doors Down would have nothing left to put into a new album. But thats just not true. Away from the sun continues on where the Better Life left off. Although the speed has been reduced on some songs, the melodies and hooks are still there, as well as that super crunch blasting from Matt's Ibanez guitars. Notable songs are Going Down in Flames, my personal favorite and soon to be the best 3 Doors Down song in my opinion, Here Without You is another great slow song reminscent of Be Like That. When I'm Gone and Dangerous Game are also new classics. All in all, another great album from this band, definitely worth picking up.

Away From the Sun gives hope to the fact that there is still some quality music being produced that isn't prepackaged crapola. 3 Doors Down turns out a very heartfelt album here steeped in their trademark guitar riffs, bending harmonies and somber thoughtful lyrics that make you want to sing along !! 3DD definitely avoids the sophomoric jinx with tunes like "Here Without You", "Running Out of Days", "Away from the Sun" and of course the tune that has become an anthem for our troops overseas "When I'm Gone" !! I haven't been this jazzed about a "southern" rock band since Drivin' & Cryin'...and these guys have the same energy, their own distinctive sound and tremendous musicianship!! These guys belt out high quality rock that carries a distinctive sound that you can be proud to have in your collection.
