Precise, highly verbal/literate folk-inflected tenor pop singer-songwriter. Van Dyke Parks and Al Stewart come to mind repeatedly. Lyrics gush out in bottomless buckets of words. Pop-centered settings vary a lot—some quiet, traditional acoustic folk; some with glowing vocal harmonies; some heavy in synth massed strings; some hip-deep in dance beats; some clattering with arty pop. Arty pop shares much of the ambition of Sufjan Stevens; I like this more, perhaps because this voice is easier to take; this offers a simpler, more direct rock-based rhythmic drive; and melodies and harmonies are more soulful, less like artificial sweetener. The album repeatedly draws my attention and gets better with each hearing.

Rarely does an indie group (or major group for that matter) followup to a debut album that is equal to it's predessesor. Villagers {Awayland} does just that, and as great as I feel that "Becoming a Jackal" is, this may have possibly surpassed it. Quirky, rooty, great song writing, and a wonderful album altogether!

I'm middle-aged (at time of writing this) - if I want to hear melody and great singing I only need Beatles/Wings. If I want to enjoy lyrics on the level of Shakespeare I just put on Dylan or Shriekback. If I want wit and a sense of fun: 10cc/Godley&Creme/Sparks/Ween. Now, the young band in all of this would be Ween who probably put their first album out 25 years ago or so, and Shakespeare a bit further back than that. "Why don't you play some young bands?", carp on my wife and 10 year old child. "Because young bands are crap!" I say to them - thinking of the millions of "American Idol" and "The Voice" and faux-hip-hop robotic/victims out there. Looking for more good music by checking the other reviews of people who give albums that I love five stars, I chanced upon this miracle: namely, "Awayland" by Villagers. They're not just a jangling copy of 60s, modern sounds are expertly interwoven within their classic sounding songs. They are complete originals, and operate with brilliant depth, creativity, awareness and soul. The highest of recommendations from me! Thank you Villagers! Whoever you are. (My 10 year old - who has been thoroughly prepared with the aboveementioned artists loves you too! So know that you are worthy to be mentioned with geniuses above, and keep up the good work!)
