Star Defender is a Galaga-style space shooter with tons of different aliens to battle against. The left mouse button is your main gun and the right mouse sends out limited missiles, a flamethower, or other extra high-powered weapons with limited capacity. You remain at the bottom of the screen using mouse to move left and right as you fire away. The author was nice enough to allow repeated firing simply by holding down the mouse button so no carpal tunnel (yay!) That said, you do get bonus points for the accuracy of your shots so top scorers try to manage their weaponry effectively.
The premise is simple, destroy everything. You fire away at the aliens and as they are destroyed they drop powerups you can use to improve your weaponry and dish out more damage. There are no real explanations as to what each powerup does, so it can result in some confusion. For instance, one powerup turns me blue and I'm not sure if that acts as a shield, makes me invincible or what. You're too focused on staying away from the fifty different aliens coming after you to notice. Instead of killing you when the aliens hit you, they take away a powerup one by one and your strength is reduced. If your powerup level gets to zero, your ship explodes and you lose a life. The only problem I have in this game is that it takes way too long to build up strength in later levels. It takes a ton of powerups before you're able to take on the later levels (at least 15-20 minimum) so the game becomes a matter of collecting all the powerups you can in the early levels then trying to stay alive as long as you can. If you die once, you're pretty much finished regardless of how many lives you may have left. It's unfortunate a new life doesn't start us off at a slightly reduced powerup level rather than starting from scratch, otherwise it'd be a really fun game.
