Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 3-This book holds all kinds of information, from what to wear in the fall, what grows at that time of year, and even migration. Beautiful photos are balanced with relatively short bursts of text that young children will find manageable. The discussion of days getting shorter and nights getting longer is followed by how this change affects the production of chlorophyll and how it ultimately results in leaves falling from trees. There is a strong logic in the presentation of the facts that aids in the understanding of the concepts presented. When the migration of birds is discussed, the author brings in the migration of whales and dolphins, insects, and even elk, as they travel from higher elevations to lower ones. What about the ones who stay behind? They hibernate or grow long coats to keep warm as winter approaches. The format is somewhat busy but the book will do well in the laps of or on the desks of the children who are reading it. Both Halloween and Thanksgiving are covered, which then leads into winter. Consider pairing this title with Lois Ehlert's Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf (1991) and Leaf Man (2004, both Harcourt), and Julia Rawlinson's Fletcher and the Falling Leaves (HarperCollins, 2006), all of which explore aspects of fall but in fictional narratives. Awesome Autumn could easily answer any questions that come up when reading them. This is a good reference book for young scholars who will love both the photos and the fun facts.-Joan Kindig, James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VAα(c) Copyright 2011. I prefer children's books that have the potential of being obsessed over. Otherwise, why pay to own it instead of just checking it out for a week or two? Children's books can be objects of obsession for their extensive factoids (be an expert!) for their aesthetics (stare for hours) or for their approachable content/narrative/characters. And although this book doesn't exactly have characters? It is obsess-ready on all fronts. Love it.

I bought this book to read to my grandchildren this coming fall and am very happy that I did. I was so pleased with the colorful pages, the wide ranging facts and fun project ideas that I couldn't wait until Autumn to share this. Both the girl, 6, and the boy, 4 love this book and I love the interesting conversations it has inspired. The only problem I'm having now is finding leaves for the leaf rubbings or pumpkin seeds to roast. Something to look forward to! I'm eager to see what Mr. Goldstone will do with Winter, Spring and Summer.

I bought this book as a suggestion for an autumn themed yoga class. The front looks fun and simple and the yoga connections I had read in suggestion seemed easy to connect. But when I opened the book in person I found it was much more complex and didn't really seem to go in any direction. It was just a jumble of anything that might happen in autumn. The pictures are colorful and vibrant and I'm sure it would be a nice book to look at on occasion but as far as reading straight through it, no good.

More About the Author

I've been a writer since I was a kid growing up in Ohio, but I've always dabbled in art and design as well. These days, my main job is writing textbooks, but I also do graphics for a New York theater company. I'm thrilled that I found a way to combine these interests in my own books.

Starting with the Great Estimations series, I've had a lot to do with how my books look. For those two books, I was the photo stylist, which meant I got to spend hours counting and arranging macaroni elbows, google eyes, fake cockroaches, and rubber ducks. And then beginning with 100 Ways to Celebrate 100 Days, I started taking some photos for my books, too. (I don't have much room here, so if you see a photo of something like an elephant in one of my books, chances are pretty good that I didn't take that one.)

Books have always been a big part of my life, from buying dusty old paperbacks in any used bookstore I could find to my first job, shelving books as a page at the Shaker Heights Public Library. I even love that word: I was a page!

In 2002, I decided it was about time I learned to speak a foreign language, so I started taking Spanish lessons. One of the biggest joys of this ongoing project/struggle has been learning to read literature in another language. These days I feel just as proud and excited to finish a book in Spanish as I did when I first read Half Magic, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, or The Once and Future King.

Oh, about those textbooks. I've written thousands of pages in pretty much any subject you can think of, from reading and math to social studies and science. I try to make them as interesting as possible, but even so, I'd like to officially apologize for any math problems or grammar worksheets that any of my readers found particularly annoying.
