I think that this tutorial is exelent. I am a fairly good with compuers and this book still taught me how to do some things. I like the artwork in the book. it shows me that the writer spent his time looking for and makeing it. The information in the book is a subset of that in the manual, downloadable for free, from cliekteam's web site. The author seems to mimick the same examples as clickteam (as far as TGF is concerned). The manual created by clickteam is better. The authors examples do not even really run that well and I do not think it is a function of TGF as I have created much better...

I think that this tutorial is exelent. I am a fairly good with compuers and this book still taught me how to do some things. I like the artwork in the book. it shows me that the writer spent his time looking for and makeing it. I think that the layout is good because it teaches u in steps and still manages to have humor every now and than. By teaching in steps people aren't overwhelmed right away with computer mumbojumbo. This book lets u create games that are better than some of the games at Comp USA and u dont have to be a 3d art expert or a C++ master. By supplying the needed software for game creation and the expert knowledge and advice of an experienced, well known, game designer now an 8 year old can create a great, fully functional, game.

4.0 out of 5 stars I actually read the book, August 8, 2000

I dont' think the other reviewers have read this book. The book is not meant for someone who has usesed TGF for 5 years - it is introductory. There is also a lot more to the book than TGF; desing, 3d stuff.

From what I understand the version of TGF is a special version only in this book and there is a lot more to the book than TGF. I found the design portion I am still reading very useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oldish, but still good value for money, June 10, 2004

I bought this book knowing that it is an old edition, because I have an old PC (1998) and don't think that the second edition's CD-ROM would work on my ancient machine. For my purposes it is an excellent book. It teaches you the basics of game making, focusing on 2D game creation, mainly via the wonderful The Games Factory software which is really value for money. If you want to get to know The Games Factory well, this is the book for you. The explanations are clear and well written. I can heartily recommend this book and CD-ROM if you want to play around, learning and making your first games. But it is probably not suitable for the serious games maker.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners, July 6, 2003
This review is from: Awesome Game Creation: No Programming Required (with CD-ROM) (Graphic Series) (CD-ROM)
If you want to get into making games but don't know where to start, this book is really really helpful in teaching you the basics of making a game without learning much programming. You can learn to make simple games at home, and it's pretty simple once you get the hang of it. It's a perfect introduction to making games. The only problem is if you want to go further, you can't save stand alone games or internet games. Still, it's awesome for people with no experiance.

For those that have never programmed in windows or are looking for a quicker way to program, this book is for you.

The book contains software to get you started. It contains all the links to web sites so you can continue to learn more.

True you could go online and try to read all the information on the web sites, but it can be hard to follow. This book give you an introduction to the language of frames, objects, frame editor, extensions, etc. It brings the subject of game creation into comprehension to the average computer user.

The advanced games programming will find comparing their current paradigm (like programming in C etc) with the new one persented interesting.

Overall, there aren't too many books on the market that give a straight forward introduction to the world of programming for games without having to program in a script language.

Installation of TGF was straight forward in windows, the 3D editor was a little more tricky though being a dos based program with a low resolution. There are other programs on the CD programs that bring together a total set of beginner gaming tools.

Would I recommended it to somebody to read, is yes.

Wow! This book is incredible. Perhaps one of the best that I've read. .... But Ahearn's AGC: NPR is an incredible title. A far cry better than any other CRM title I have read thus far.

If you are already a knowledgable and talented user of The Games Factory, you really have no use for this book, except to refresh yourself on Game Design Theory. However, if you are new to the program, or don't even know what it is, you are in LUCK!

This title covers the basics, and then even goes into advanced items, such as transparencies, graphics, and even using 3D software to create 3d games, possibly on parallel with Doom, if the creator is talented enough.

I'm more than impressed with the title, and inally, Charles River Media has not disappointed me. It's such a great book, even the preface gets me pumped up. I recommend this book to anyone interested in game design, but didn't know where to start.

I bought this book thinking it was a full game creater only
to find out it was only find out it's not the full version and you have to go online to register this game only to find nothing on the web site to register it on.
you will see Games Factory Screen on start up.
you will not be able to save stand alone games
you will not be able to make screen saves or internet games +
i am a bit disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for the new game designer!, October 15, 2002

Running a game development team can be a trying experience. Between contracts, NDAs, game design documents and actually understanding the elements of an engine, theres a lot demanded of the game designer. This book has helped set me straight on a lot of topics and has me managing my development team 115% more efficiently. The game creation programs that come on the CD are great too to get a feel for how functions relate to player input, animations, graphics, collion factors and the such. Why do you need to know that? Well if you're creating an engine, you're going to need to know what you want it to do.

This book is a great help. Advanced game designers might find no new information, but if you are a new or inexperienced game designer, this is a must have in your library!
