As a semi-professional photographer, I was compelled to choose this book simply for what I thought would be some good 'ol comedic relief much in the same way I enjoy watching funny home video programs on TV. But what I was ultimately left feeling was much different than I had envisioned.

This book would actually make a fairly good reference for aspiring photographers to read. "Avoid these poses" should be the mantra.

Ultimately, this is a a collection of over-used & cliche poses, simply badly taken family portraits, photographs taken at the wrong time and glimpses of personal family moments. Somehow all of these "awkward family photos" have escaped into the wild. More accurately, they have been submitted by the families and therefore haven't really escaped, they've been released into the wild.

There were a few chuckles to be had, but far too few. I felt that he cover photograph was actually the most amusing photo in the book. Had I visited the Awkward Family Photos website prior to getting the book, I would have been much less inclined to choose this book. A visit or two to the website would have been more than enough Awkward Family Moments for me.

I've got a pretty good sense of humor, but this book just didn't float for me.

I've frequently enjoyed those witty, sardonic emails we all receive from time to time that are too funny for words - embarrassing photographs with cutting captions that point directly to the absurdity, inanity or the absolute stupidity of the situation. Similarly, one of my favorite television programs - Mystery Science Theater 3000 - never failed to have me in convulsions of laughter. The premise was to show the worst of the worst movies, then have the narrators mercilessly eviscerate the story, the actors, the sets, the special effects, etc...to the amusement and delight of the audience. While on the surface these attacks seemed mean spirited, in the end it was harmless, enjoyable and very, very funny. Was it `high art?' No, just the opposite I suspect. But it was never less than highly entertaining.

That was the spirit I was hoping for here, and I really think that was the intent of the authors. I think they were going for that brilliant, scathing humor made all the funnier because we've all been in those situations. Unfortunately I really didn't find the book to be very entertaining at all. Granted, there were a few photos that made me laugh - but mostly I just groaned at the obvious jokes or winced at the awkwardness of the people in the picture. If you're looking for really clever or witty observations - I think you will be disappointed with this book, as I was.

If you will permit the comparison, this book is the bad movie lambasted in Mystery Science Theater 3000 - not the brilliant satirical commentary of the characters of the show.

While some of the images spur a laugh, many are merely amusing — and a good many are a bit forced. A good idea in search of a higher standard of images.

Prior to viewing this book I was unfamiliar with the whole Awkward Family Photo phenomenon. The idea seemed greatly amusing, so I was anxious to receive the book. I imagined chortling over the pictures with the kids and then leaving it out for visitors to enjoy. The book arrived in time to take along on a long family road trip. I initially handed it back to my teenage son, he looked the book over and put it down rather quickly - not one chuckle. My older daughter then noticed it and snatched it up. Crickets chirped. When she set it aside I grabbed it up for a go-over. Can't say that I added to the levity. Some of the photos are perhaps mildly amusing but nothing was laugh-out-loud funny. Most of the "personal stories" are indeed awkward but nothing I would pay to read.

Apparently a lot of people enjoy the website and perhaps those fans might enjoy the book. I would highly recommend they check it out of the library (if possible) or take a peek at it in the store before ordering. Not my cup of tea.

Do not recommend.

I saw two pictures from this book in an article and thought I have to order that as a gift for my Mom, looked hilarious. Book came today and I looked through it and I didn't even laugh once, barely smiled. And I'm a person who loves to laugh. What a let down. I'm not even going to give it as the gift I intended to.

I have to agree with the earlier reviewer...this is not what we are used to as far as the creativity and the comments on the photos. Both seem to have been watered down for the book. I was especially disappointed with the quality of the pictures. I did get an uncorrected proof for review so maybe the one for sell will have clearer pictures? I also didn't care for the cooments made by the owners of the pictures...who cares why they did it, it is just funny to see that they did.

I am happier with the website and I think I will just stick with that as I think the book loses the edge that the website has.

The concept of this book is clever and funny but it isn't worth purchasing. I would recommend instead to browse the website. I received an advanced reader's copy of this book so I don't know if it is an example of the actual book. The photos in the book were of terrible quality. The pictures were often very grainy, had poor exposure, and were all black and white on very low grade, dark grey colored paper. The tid bits of info or stories that accompanied some of the photos were not that humorous or interesting. I did chuckle out loud once or twice during the 45 minutes it took me to get through the book. When I finished the book I didn't even have the interest to scan through it once more.

Mike Bender and Doug Chernak, Awkward Family Photos (Three Rivers Press, 2010)

It was a couple of weeks ago (as I write this; you will be seeing them posted on the same day. Internet time is a funny thing) that I wrote a lukewarm-at-best review of I Can Has Cheezburger?, the blog-to-book that kind of started this whole schlemazel. And I'll admit that maybe I'm simply looking in the wrong places for my blog-to-book fix. After all, everyone loved Julie and Julia, right? (One problem: I loathe memoirs.) And to be fair to my own self, I had no idea Awkward Family Photos was a blog when I added the book version to the 2011 goal list. On the other hand, to be unfair to my own self, I have no idea whether that is affecting my judgment here. Unfortunately, I can's go back to the pre-web days of silly comedic books and compare my reactions to them back then with my reactions to this now. Mostly because I was drunk back then and don't remember. But I digress. Maybe I'm just getting cynical in my old age, but the comedy supposedly inherent in found stuff just isn't there for me, really. I've perused a few of the other found-object attempts at humor (the most notable of these being, obviously, Found [q.v.]), and I don't get it. Once I discovered the bloggish nature of this one, I thought maybe the huge base of user-submitted content would make this sort of highlight reel more attractive? Ah, but then there is my recent I Can Has Cheezburger? experience... all of this is a very logorrheic way of saying "I felt like I should be liking this book a whole lot more than I did, and if you combine my reviews of Found and I Can Has Cheezburger?, you'll get a great idea of why." Which is a less logorrheic, but more evasive, way of saying "go read those, nothing to see here, folks."

But really, do you need a review to tell you whether you want a book like this or not? You're either a fan of (a) the blog or (b) the subject matter, or you're not. Pretty cut-and-dried, methinks. **

There are a few that are funny but mostly they are just retro pics. I bought it for a gift and it was a flop.

Well, I found this book disappointing. I was expecting some funny or touching photos, but got a book of pretty plain family snapshots. Maybe as a college photography teacher, my expectations are too high, but I cannot recommend this book.
