It always lasts 40 days, but those 40 days occur on different dates from one year to the next. The 40 days occur immediately before Easter, but because Sundays are excluded from the count, the days of this season are not consecutive. Unlike other holy seasons, which typically begin on a Sunday, this one commences midweek. Believers approach it in a variety of ways. Pamela Hawkins calls it the awkward season. For each day of the week, prayers of invocation, confession, intercession, and thanksgiving are shaped around a theme prompted by the psalm for the day. A daily scripture reading is provided, but Hawkins welcomes readers to use a different passage if it comes to mind; this book, she reminds the reader, is designed to support rather than dictate a Lenten journey. A finger labyrinth at the back of the book serves as an optional prayer tool for those who wish to try it and an order for Lenten praise and prayer provides a simple, beautiful way for groups who meet weekly to share this Lenten experience. Pamela Hawkins serves as the managing editor of Weavings magazine. She was formerly the associate pastor of Belle Meade United Methodist Church in Nashville, Tennessee, and formerly the associate director of the Duke Center for Excellence in Ministry at Duke Divinity School in Durham, North Carolina.

More About the Author

Pamela C. Hawkins is Associate Pastor at Belmont United Methodist Church in Nashville, Tennessee. Before joining the ministry staff at Belmont, she was appointed managing editor of Weavings: A Journal of the Christian Spiritual Life, a publication of The Upper Room. Prior to that, Hawkins served in other local church ministries in Tennessee, and as associate director of the Duke Center for Excellence in Ministry at Duke Divinity School in Durham, North Carolina. Hawkins received her Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from Duke University with an emphasis in linguistics, a Master of Divinity from Vanderbilt University Divinity School, and a Doctor of Ministry in Christian Spirituality from Columbia Theological Seminary. She lives in Nashville with her husband Ray, where she spends her free time writing, gardening, and teaching about spiritual practices of prayer, justice, and contemplation.

This book has truly been a blessing to me. It's a great guide that enhances my praying life. It also directs you to scriptures that support the daily readings/meditations as well. I will be looking for other material to continue making my prayer life stronger after the lenton season is over.

Pamela C. Hawkins is an amazing author. Although Lent began only a few days ago, I eagerly wait for my daily time with this book. Her choice of words and phrases in the prayers moves me and stirs my soul to the core. I am so thankful to have received this and highly recommend it to anyone who is wants to experience a very special Lenten devotional season.

In how to use this book it is said that this book is designed to support rather than dictate your Lenten journey. So if I look at it this way the book is is not a bad book. I guess I was expecting something that would stir my creativity.
