Hip Hop Perfection,
By "rephewz" (Middlesbrough, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Awkward (Audio CD)
As far as I know Ty has been in the hip hop culture for years, and this albums shows it. Experience and raw skills are large contributing factors to the excellence of this album. Every track on this album is one you'll want to repeatedly hear. Tracks about personal experiences such as 'Hercules', fun stories such as 'The Tale', raps about his different experiences with jealousy on 'Jealousy', battle raps, French rap and more all demonstrate the musical diversity of this album, and Ty's style. This album is a pleasant rarity in that it doesn't feature many people at all. The only other MC's who rap on this album are on one track, 'Zaibo', who rap in French. Ty's rapping style is humorous, mellow and all together refreshing. His lyrics are excellent, not always rhyming... but always sounding smooth and perfect. All together 'Awkward' is a album well worth buying, and when you do buy it, you're paying for every track on this album in that they're all excellent quality, and if you're anything like me... you'll like them all!

Honest,

This album displays the sort of honesty that is unfortunately VERY rare these days in rappers. TY is in another league, he displays charisma, great lyricism and humour. Musically the album is a treat too containing something that is garaunteed to please all. A great album from a true artist.

At last,

At long last the most anticipated British Hip Hop album has finally landed. Heads like me have been waiting for the longest for Ty to drop his joint and the wait has definately been worth it! Ty's now famous rhyme skills are in evidence lyrics laced with humour and clever rhymes, and the beats are on point. For anybody who has been sleeping on British Hip Hop you need to cop this, you get me though? (south London slang)

Wah blow!!,

Ty is like Britain's answer to De La Soul, That's not to say he sounds like 'em, but he seems to rap about the same kind of subjects and with the same sort of philosophy. I bought the album 'cause I've seen Ty a few times at the lyrical lounge at the jazz cafe in camden and I liked his flows. The album is certainly not dissapointing, with lots of live instrumentation, the legendary DJ Pogo, and ty's philosophical rhyme style it can't fail to be a winner! I know most U.S. cats don't think british hip hop is any good, but this album is the bomb! Buy it if you like The Roots, Dela, Mos def, Talib Kweli and you will definately be feelin' it! This is a Hip-hop classic, make no mistake. Oh, and don't forget to check out Roots Manuva's album too .

Pleasant Surprise,

I had heard of Ty, but wasn't sure what to expect when I bought the album. After a few listens, I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. Some of the tracks (Mind Made Up, Break the Lock) are really easy to get into, others take a little time. Very good stuff.

Awkward indeed,

Ty is not a bad MC, but he is definitely from the UK. If you don't know what I mean, you haven't really listened to rap from the two sides of the Atlantic. For some reason MCs from Britain are stuck in a rap time warp. They are still on that audience interaction/punchline stuff, which is great, but not for an entire album. Ty has some narratives but his rapping is still subpar. The tracks are all very easy and they flow, but nothing really "grabs you". I wasn't feelin' this album.
