Editorial Reviews

From Kirkus Reviews

"Sandoe keeps up the suspense as he slowly unwraps the mystery of Axel's past and effectively evokes the compassion that develops between strangers when a loved one is in distress . . . [T]he author delivers a raw, honest and humorous story about illness and recovery. An engaging, darkly comedic tale."

Review

Author Scotty-Miguel Sandoe masterfully weaves a story of friendship, perseverance, and hope, which he highlights with twists that are out of the blue but somehow remain believable and entertaining. He handles the topic of cancer with appropriately stark images, but never in a manner that tries to either trivialize or sensationalize the disease. His use of fantasy segments cleverly help pull together and resolve some of the story line's multiple subplots. Sandoe's wonderfully witty and creative style provides a well-paced, highly enjoyable novel . . . ." Clarion

More About the Author

Scotty-Miguel's first novel, AXEL HOOLEY'S DEATH WATCH LIST, is a comedy of (mostly) fiction, inspired by his own battle and recovery from cancer, specifically the events set in motion one chemotherapy-infused Christmas when he awoke with a fever in his underpants beneath a tree in Beverly Hills.

A screenwriter living in Los Angeles, Scotty-Miguel began his career as an actor, playwright and choreographer in Chicago and New York where he participated in the development of over 200 new plays and original musicals.

His first screenplay was produced by Tomorrow Films, CONFESSIONS OF AN AMERICAN GIRL (original title "Lifers' Picnic"), and starred Jena Malone, Brad Renfro, Clifton Collins, Jr., Michelle Forbes and Alicia Witt. This offbeat dramedy enjoyed a two-year run on Showtime network, as well as brisk DVD rental and sales.

He is currently at work on the second book in the AXEL HOOLEY trilogy, as well novelizing a historical romantic comedy.

Suspend your preconceptions and just enjoy the ride; this is not the usual cancer-survival guide. Part mystery, part fantasy, part whimsy, part agony, this beautifully written, sarcastic take on a deadly serious situation ends up being far more than a cathartic memoir. Although it can be wrenching for anyone who has lived through a loved one's battle with illness, its humor relieves the strain. And it ultimately offers a profound lesson to us all, sick and healthy alike. Would be perfect for book groups since there is much to discuss.

This author has a really unique and special voice. Such vivid imagery and even when I wasn't reading it, I was thinking about it and wanting to get back to it! That's the best kind of novel! I hope there are more to come!

This is a poignant and interesting story. It was hard to put down. I have had trouble finding something interesting to read among the piles of trash that currently occupy the Amazon Kindle store, and this was definitely not trash. While some people might hesitate because the story does dip into the cancer experience, it is done in a creative and humorous way so that you don't find yourself wanting to slit your wrists 12 pages in. I very much enjoyed the style of writing and the pacing of the book. The characters were extremely memorable and didn't have that annoyingly phony or stereotypical air about them. It felt very real and down-to-earth but had a supernatural lilt to it that was just very enjoyable.

Axel Hooley's Death Watch list is an engaging, fun read. I started reading it and couldn't put it down until I finished it. The author has a rare gift for making the reader laugh out loud then turn the page and mourn for poor Axel. This is a delightful book. I can't wait for the sequel.

Scott could have simply chronicled his very challenging battle with cancer. A simple memoir: That would probably have been quite readable! Instead, he took inspiration from this life-altering event to create a tart and smart fiction. And it's lucky for us readers that he did.

In fact, he's created a compelling Bildungsroman for our times. Axel is a foundling, and the journey that takes him from a foster Amish family to the wilds of Hollywood is a tale in itself. The book is also a love letter to Los Angeles, and for the created families that one makes when living in such a place. Axel's found family members are funny, memorable, and sharply drawn.

Sandoe is also not afraid to dip his toes into the metaphysical. As Axel's illness brings him lower and lower, he finds himself possibly making a connection with what may be an entirely different plane of existence. Is it real, or just the chemo?

One thing's for sure: I will be looking forward to Mr. Sandoe's next book.

As fans of Showtime's The Big C know, cancer can come with the funny and Sandoe's premiere novel, Axel Hooley's Death Watch List, brings the funny in spades. Along the journey, though, it also brings the pathos and the heart and in many ways it becomes a love letter to Los Angeles and its surrounding environs. Sandoe here shows that not only is he a deft storyteller who can weave magic by taking the reader on a ride with fantastic (and fantastical) characters through seemingly complex plots, he also shows that his is a unique new voice that needs to be encouraged, followed, applauded and supported. Cannot wait to see his next work.

Axel Hooley's Death Watch List is funny, fast-paced, charming, and odd. Both Tom Robbins and P.G. Wodehouse came to mind at times, but the author's voice is unique. Probably the funniest cancer story you'll ever read. It would make a great movie.
