IRM's brains and brawn collaborated for a project called Retina for an album titled Batterie a few years ago. For those of you who are familiar with this project and are looking for this to be a sequel, I think you'll be disapointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Albums I have heard in years., October 20, 2001
This review is from: Axioms (Audio CD)
It's not often that a band like Impossible Recording Machine comes along... and when they do appear, its not often they get the respect they deserve. IRM is one band that needs that respect and even more. Their album Axioms is one of the most diverse intricate pieces of music i have ever heard. Songs like Absentia and The Bells carry with them an atmosphere that is hard to experience when listening to any other music... If you consider yourself a fan and lover of music..this album is a must have.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great debut, October 20, 2001

Impossible Recording Machine's debut Axioms is an interesting piece of work. The songs, although broken into three groups(these parts are still intermixed) blend together well.
Standouts are 'Compulsive 3,' 'The Bells," 'Safety in Numbers,' & 'The Soft Wire.'
Both 'The Bells' and 'Safety in Numbers' are among the songs on the album that have vocals (only select songs do) and stand out as intelligent sounding pop songs. The songs are not only listener friendly but also invigoratingly fresh, not the kind of recycled sound so common to current pop music.
'Copulsive 3' is a fast powerfully energetic track that could be considered a 'dance' tune in the club scene except for one fact, it is humanly impossible to keep up with this track.
Overall a great album, has a few slow points, but for the most past is an amazing conceptual disc and I can't wait to see where this leads.

3.0 out of 5 stars Genre-bending (what more can you say?), October 20, 2001

IRM's brains and brawn collaborated for a project called Retina for an album titled Batterie a few years ago. For those of you who are familiar with this project and are looking for this to be a sequel, I think you'll be disapointed.

Axioms is rather a completely new offering in a completely different setting from these two musicans. Rather than an edgy rock/electronic offering, this album is slower and more experimental than its predecessor. Comparisons are naturally going to occur, but both albums do stand by themselves.

The album has a lot of different personalities. One song will be a pop-almost-radio-friendly song and the next will be a soundscape which defies most genre classification. So when you buy this album, don't expect one particular song to sum up the album.

The quality of music is definately par for the course, in terms of what these guys are capable of putting out. There are some moments where experimentalism seems to take precedence over good songwriting, but this is where some of the conflict, pop verses experimentalism, rise on the album. Some of the songs are arranged conservatively, complete with vocals (in a verse and chorus structure) and other pieces are very lose or jagged. You must be able to recognize these arrangement differences in order to grasp the album. Otherwise, your head will be left spinning!

Axioms is a must own CD for anyone into a wide variety of music.
From the moment you hear the lush layers of Interference you instantly fall in love with it. An excellent preview to what will be an amazing box set next year. Highlights include The Bells, Dragging The Lake, Shutdown and The Beauty Of Sadness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Music, October 19, 2001

If I could only use one word to describe this album it would be "Wow!"
Jim and Matt are obviously heading in a new direction and bring us along for the ride on Axioms. A 15 track preview album, Axioms combines poppy, upbeat vocally driven songs, with experimental, and some ambient. Never before have I heard anything like it. It starts out with Interference a song that leaves you searching through the darkness of it's layers of intricate sounds. Next is Safety in Numbers, a poppy song with an interesting blend of rock, regae, experimental and who knows what else. Truly a sound that will open your eyes. Then is Compulsive 3, a short track composed mainly of Matt Walker's incredible drumming. Then The Bells and Dragging The Lake, possibly my favorite songs on the album. These songs are much more traditionally arranged and are so so good. I won't get into detail about the rest of the songs, because I'll leave that for you, but you can't go wrong with IRM. Incredible music, with incredible lyrics. If you are tired the mainstream music scene and want something incredibly new and different and in my opinion brilliant, this is what you're looking for.

I originally heard about IRM from the Sister Machine Gun website, I went to the site, listened to some of their music and was quite impressed. I bought this CD as soon as it was released and was blown away by the music. IRM brings together many different styles, some classic, some experimental to develop very interesting soundscapes. Anyone who likes industrial with a kind of rockish feal to it will love this CD.
