I'm surprised by all the negative reviews! I actually bought this twice b/c my first one got stolen after a year! I tried a different brand first just b/c I wanted it immediately and I thought I'd try something else. I ended up returning it and buying this again! A lot of the ones in the store have wires that go between the 2 monitors but this does not-- this is important if you have a minivan and go on long trips where you may need to scoot to the back of the car. I also love having the DVD controls up by me as the driver-- my kids are 3 and 1 and can't control it. When I tried the one with the DVD player inside the monitor it was a total pain to try to press play. I just love this product and would buy it again!!!!!

This product was terrific... briefly. We used it only on long car trips and had 5-6 flawless uses. However, it eventually just started freezing up less than one year after purchase. Don't buy. Very unreliable.

We purchased this product on line and got it in the mail, opened it up and put it in the travel case. The next day we were scheduled to take a trip, 2 hours into it the kids wanted to see a movie and one screen doesn't work, just sound. We have already thrown out the box and reciept, I guess we are out of luck. Hang on to everything if you purchase it.

I purchased this item in March of 2008 for my two children, ages 1 and 6. We planned to use this in my husband's pickup truck to keep the kids entertained while on the road. About a month after purchase, the dvd player broke. No sound, no picture. I sent the item back and shortly thereafter, I received the replacement. I also wrote a review titled "Strike One" that is no longer posted. After 2 months of use, the second product did exactly the same thing as the first. Again, no sound or picture. Also, just enough time to be out of the warranty window. My advice to anyone in the market for a portable dvd player- "You get what you pay for". Spend a little more and you will get a better product. I have learned my lesson, but with a $150.00 pricetag.

I chose this dual-screen dvd player despite the reviews complaining about longevity because it has a key feature that makes it more user-friendly for parents of very young children. For 11.99, I added a two-year warranty from Square Trade (which gets excellent reviews here on Amazon).

I just returned from a 1600-mile roundtrip drive with a 1-year-old and 4-year-old, and I am very glad I had this with me. I'd say it got six- to eight hours of use, and it works perfectly so far.

Pros:
*An adult can control the DVD player from the front seat. This model has two screens and a separate DVD player, while the other models combined the DVD player with one of the screens. Some reviewers of the other units said they had to uninstall the screen from the seat in order to change DVDs. That would have been a huge pain while on the move, especially considering my children watch DVDs like Bob the Builder that are only 30 minutes long.

Each screen has its own volume control.

When my son fell asleep, I just unplugged his screen from the player unit in my lap, while my daughter was able to continue watching.

The cords are long enough to accommodate a child who is still rear-facing, or a third-row seat of a minivan.

There is a well-designed carrying case. A small detail, but some of the other units do not have one, and you may not want to leave this in the car for long.

The player was moved around a lot while DVDs were playing, but there was no skipping.

Cons:
The volume on the screens cannot be controlled from the main unit, or from the remote control, which can be frustrating if you have small children who can't reach the screen (or even figure out how to use it).

The units feel flimsy (but I do have that warranty).

Many of our kids' DVDs are naturally scratched up a bit. Our home DVD player can still play them, but this one couldn't play a number of those we tried.

You may need the remote control to do things like adjust captions (I couldn't figure it out on the main player).

I am back, ready to buy my second one, after the first one I bought stopped working after a year. Why??? Well the truth is not many dual DVD's have great reviews, and I did have a great experience for a year. I loved that the DVD is housed separately from the screens and that I can have that close to me in the front of the car. I am able to change DVD's without a problem while on the road. The honest truth is, I have no idea why it stopped working. My mom took the kids for the weekend and when she got back, it was not working anymore. We used this DVD player happily for countless trips, including a long road trip from Chicago to Nashville and back.

What I have to recommend to anyone considering this product is to buy the extended warranty thru amazon as well. The day mine stopped working, I called them up and within a week I had a check in hand for the entire purchase price! I am back to try my luck at another one, and will be getting the extended warranty again.

I purchased this unit a little over a year ago. I was not expecting much, given the negative reviews, but we needed something like this for a long 8hr drive with the kids and the price was right. Here we are a year later and it is still working perfectly. The DVD player has been used at least 100 hours (we travel a lot)!. I make sure to take it out immediately after trips and if the weather is extreme, it doesn't stay in the car overnight on vacation either. I am not sure if some units are being left in the car continuously and being exposed to sun/heat or what. Or maybe it is hit and miss if you get a functioning one or a lemon. I left the remote on the top of the car once, so we don't have that to use, but I can still reach back easily from the passenger seat and adjust the volume. The unit itself is lightweight and easy to store. The cords are of ample length and pretty durable, we tuck the excess in the back of the driver/passenger seat flap so the kids don't tangle their feet up in them. The adjustable tilt on the screens are nice for reducing the glare. This unit does not come with an AC adapter for the home, or a battery -- it is for the car only, so if you're looking for a truly portable DVD player, this unit is not for you.

I've seen a lot of poor reviews for products like this. My guess is that people only write reviews if they experience problems. I went ahead and bought the product and it is working great! We used it for movies on our 3-day trip to our destination spot, and the 3-day trip back as well. I give it a 4-star rating only because you can't hook up other electronics to the monitor for viewing. I've tried several different things, and it only seems to work for the actual DVD player it comes with. If you plan on simply watching DVDs with it, it's perfect for you! If you plan on hooking up your video camera for viewing, or other portable video games, you will want to buy a unit that has an optional composite input on the monitor.

After searching for 6 months, I bought this dvd player based on reviews I found on Amazon. We took it on a 30+ hour road trip with a preschooler and toddler and we were overjoyed it worked perfectly for the entire trip. We did unplug it every time we stopped and kept it in a temperate climate. I loved that the main dvd unit could fit on our center console so I could easily change from one movie to the next instead of having to unhook the dvd player from the seat as some other Dual Dvd models require. So changing dvds was a snap. I liked that each screen had it's own volume and on/off switch in case one child was napping. However I did wish the main unit had a volume control in case I needed to turn down both units in a hurry for a drive-through or toll stop. I did buy the 2-year warranty from SquareTrade in case we had problems, but so far, this unit has worked perfectly and I'm very happy with my purchase.

This is a great product for traveling in the car with 2 kids. They both have to watch the same thing but that's fine for now. The only drawback is the lack of a battery pack which makes it unusable for airline travel.
