Best mastering of Hendrix I've heard since the orig LP's
Worth the investment in my humble opinion. Nice packaging and booklet too. I bought the 3 orig releases, then bought 3 more for an old high school buddy. great price at amazon.

A Passage to India(n),
By Amaranth "music fan" (Northern California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Axis Bold As Love CD/DVD (Audio CD)
"Axis: Bold as Love" was one of Jimi Hendrix's most brilliant, original works of music. It's a strange irony that while Hendrix was proud of his Cherokee heritage, when he said he was Indian, his British collaborators probably thought of their recently independent colony... and hence the Hindu imagery in their album art. The music is electrifying.
"Axis" opens with "Exp",a concept album about life in outer space. In a sense, the Psychedelic Shaman foreshadowed The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust "Spanish Castle Magic" has a flamenco feel to it, Hendrix was also foreshadowing the Latin psychedelic rock of Carlos Santana Multi-Dimensional Warrior "Castles Made of Sand" is a companion to the Grateful Dead's "Sand Castles/Glass Camels" on Blues for Allah He was the source of inspiration for the psychedelic movement. There are classics such as the anthemic "If 6 was 9" and "Little Wing." It ends with the powerful "Bold as Love." The companion DVD is far better than the ones with The Beatles Stereo Box Set Those mainly consist of Paul and Ringo saying,"We had lots of fun." The companion DVD for "Axis" goes into detail on Hendrix's inspirations, instrumentation, anyone with an appreciation of music theory will find it fascinating. Hendrix was a rarity--he was as much a genius in the studio as he was onstage. "Axis" is bold music, bold as love!

An awe-inspiring album by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, plain and simple,
By Eric S. Kim (Southern California) - See all my reviews

In today's generation, where Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift dominate the radio, I'm so glad that I've found many alternatives (one of them being the legendary Jimi Hendrix and The Jimi Hendrix Experience). After the first album, Are You Experienced, in comes Axis: Bold as Love. This is a stunningly satisfying album that you just HAVE to listen from beginning to end. Every track on this album (even the non-musical opener "EXP") is something of a marvel. Songs like "Little Wing," "Wait Until Tomorrow," and "If 6 was 9" are solid gold. "One Rainy Wish," my personal favorite on the album, is undoubtedly one of the greatest from Hendrix. "She's So Fine," the only song on this album sung by Noel Redding, is musically rich and lyrically entrancing. "Little Miss Lover" is a little off here and there, but it's great nonetheless.
I'm 23 years old, but I wish I became a fan of Jimi Hendrix much MUCH sooner. This is awe-inspiring, sometimes godly, rock music. Grade: 9.9/10

Horrible gimmick...the 1997 remaster with new packaging.,
By Manic Nirvana (Minnesota) - See all my reviews

Way to rip off true fans. These are the 1997 remasters (which do sound good) in new packaging with a worthless DVD. It's a 17 minute DVD with producer/engineer Eddie Kramer talking about Jimi and playing a snippet of a few songs. We've already heard the songs and know he's good. Nothing interesting or new. The albums should have gotten a fresh remaster for 2010 and the second disc could have been better utilized as bonus tracks, such as outtakes or live stuff. Even the booklets and disc labels themselves look exactly the same. If you bought the last remasters you don't need any of the main 3 studio albums, Band Of Gypsys, or First Rays. 5 stars for the album itself but, zero stars for the disc. This 2010 reissue is not a remaster and is definitely screwing the public.

"Axis" have been a classic for over 40 years, so i'm not going to review the album, but this Deluxe Edition.
The remastered sound is really an improvement if you only listened to the first pressings of it on CD. But, if you already have the '97 remasters, it's just the same thing. I'm givin' it 4 stars because of the dvd. It's so short, that i really wonder why not to put a CD of demos or live recordings from the era? It would be so better.

Jimi's poetry in song for you to enjoy! This album, which was a rushed job, Jimi said he hated that of this album the most, stands out as his most personal and poetic collection of songs to be released on a album in his lifetime. The pre-rap style vocals on "Castles made of sand" along with the picturesque lyrics imprints scenes in your mind as you follow the dialogue in song. The infamous "If 6 was 9" lamentation still runs poignant and proper today as it did yesterday in Jimi's world, calling out the hatred and greed of those who seek to oppress those who conjure the simplistic lifestyle of universal freedom, Jimi says "I'm the one thats gonna die when it's my time to die, so let me live my life the way I want too! There, sing on Brother, Play on Drummer......"Play on Jimi......play on!

This is one of Jimi's best in my opinion. I first heard it in 1967 when it came out. Over the years I wore the lp out, and was so glad to find it on CD almost fourty years later!

I've never owned this album before (not even on vinyl), but a mate from years ago taped his vinyl copy for me, so I do know the tracks fairly well.
13 tracks and only a couple not right up to Jimi's usual 'A-grade' standard (but still good). There's lots of great laid-back tracks on this album (Up From The Skies; Little Wing; If 6 Was 9; Castles Made Of Sand; One Rainy Wish), and an equal number of kick-arse[as we spell it in Australia] songs too. Not quite my absolute favourite album for 1967 (there's Cream [Disraeli Gears] & Pink Floyd [Piper At The Gates Of Dawn] & Beatles [Pepper's, Magical Mystery Tour, George's songs off Yellow Submarine album] & Stones [Their Satanic Majesties Request] all competing rather well; but still up there with the front runners of 1967. I think Jimi's 1967 songs off CD-with-bonus-tracks album: Are You Experienced [which is most of them, but not all], were a bit more cutting-edge for 1967, but this is still a great follow up. Maybe a slight 'dip', but his next album: Electric Ladyland [1968] saw Jimi climbing powerfully-creatively again [for me at least]. Axis Bold As Love highly recommended.

How do you write a review for the greatest rock guitarist that ever lived? Oh yea, here it is: "The sound quality of the CD was pretty good and the packaging was very good and when the guitar came on the earth stopped it's rotation around the sun." Well actually that is a pretty accurate decription of this item-especially the last part. This album also comes with a DVD. It has Mitch Michell,(drums) Noel Redding,(Bass) and the original recording engineer for Axis. Some interesting inside info here but it would have been nice to have also included some more original footage. All in all this 17 minute DVD was a very welcome addition to an album that was never expected to include a video disk. A very nice package at an excellent price.
