(4.5 stars) Hendrix's hippie guru singer-songwriter album? Yeah, we'll go with that,

This review is from: Axis: Bold As Love (Audio CD)
Axis is the weakest of the original Jimi Hendrix albums. Still, it does get 4.5 stars, so it's not like it sucks or anything. The emphasis is on the songwriting this time (rather than the guitar), and he's moved well beyond the debut's sex, drugs and rock `n' roll approach. In fact, there's a lot of first-rate pop ballads to be found here, and not just the beautiful mini-symphony "Little Wing": "Castles Made of Sand" is Jimi at his most poetic; "One Rainy Wish" is a wonderful piece of psychedelic folk with heavy guitars; "Up from the Skies" is mellow, jazzy, and funny; "Bold As Love" unloads original metaphors and a heavenly guitar solo. There's some hard rock here, and while it's less pronounced, it's certainly worthwhile: the anti-conformity fusion jam "If 6 Was 9"; the stampeding "Spanish Castle Magic"; likable funk-rock on Noel Redding's "She's So Fine"; "Little Miss Lover"; and "You Got Me Floatin'" (I stress likable because they're clearly not highlights). The only real headache is the feedback experiment "E.X.P": the rest is quite recommendable.
