Versatile Recording,
By Paul Kendall "Paul" (Los Angeles) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Axis of Evil (Audio CD)
What strikes me most about "Axis of Evil" is the versatility. A CD that sounds good enough for club play, driving or at home. It's EBM/aggro that works well enough for a variety of settings and moods.
Axis of Evil has all the requisite stuff: evil samples, pounding beats, growling vocals all with a slight techno edge thrown in for good measure. My favorite track is "Consume Your Vengence". "Cause of Death Suicide" and "Face of Death" might be a little more geared for club play. Less clubby but equally intruiging are "Mordfabrik" and "Plastik Christ". Less sinister than previous Suicide Commando recordings, it may not appeal to hardcore fans as much. Still, Axis of Evil tries to please, and in most instances I think it does.

Good Stuff.,

Suicide Commando gleefully wallows in a hostile dance groove while punctuating it with a synthetic attack matched by few. Axis of Evil is a hyperbolical agro-industrial-techno record that is sure to please all fans of the genre.

A shining example of what industrial music really is,

Suicide Commando has been one of those bands that has put out a few good hits now and then...but failed put out an album that was truly great all the way through. Their last album, Mindstrip, was a bland affair in my opinion with the exception of songs Hellraiser and Love Breeds Suicide. Axis Of Evil, though, is a significant improvement over that album. The slow, banging, low bpm style that Suicide Commando is known for has been energized with a faster pace and more complex backround synths. Clever samples and sound effects have also been utilized to give the recording an ominous feel. The marching beat of Face Of Death and the sirens in the backround of Mordfabrik are almost hypnotic. The result is an overall more refined sound that makes the album enjoyable from start to finish. No future-pop or ebm here...just pure militant electro-industrial. Fans of the harsher side of industrial music should definitely add Axis Of Evil to their collection.

Wow!,

I don't know if you'd like to rip it up on the dance floor to the chant "Each Year approximately one million people die from suicide" but the first track, "Cause of Death: Suicide", is wicked once it gets going. In fact, once "Axis of Evil" gets going, it doesn't let up! Skinny Puppy and Ministry fans, you will adore Suicide Commando! I love the beats tempered with elegant keyboards and I love Johan Van Roy's voice. Socially anxious and globally critical of US-involvement in anything, Suicide Commando was born to command you!

Best SC to date!,

I have never been a big Suicide Commando fan but I do play them from time to time at the club I dj at and I have just never liked them. That all changed when I got Axis of Evil, I believe this to be one of the best releases of the year! Almost every last song works on the dance floor. Since getting Axis of Evil (about 2 weeks ago) I have played a song off this cd every night I dj (two nights a week). I really enjoy this cd, very industrial sounding and for the first time a very well recorded SC release, not a sign of any that ebm crap packing the floor most of the time now. Good Songs that work the dance floor include "Cause of Death", "Consume Your Vengence", "One Nation Under God", "Evildoer", "Plastik Christ" and the best song of the CD (for a club anyway) is "Face of Death". Face of Death has gone over great every last time I have played it and I can't count how many people have inquired about who that song was done by. One of the two best cds to be released this year (Decoded Feedback being the other).

Impressed by the release,

I liked it, great soundscapes,, I found this album to be kind of dance oriented, very short but sweet album I thought the crashing beats and the sound was pretty good although I wasn't really feeling that type of robotic synth vocals used in "one nation under god", I recommend it highly.

Hard industrial with a dance beat,

I bought Mindstrip after hearing a remix of Hellraiser that blew me away!! I was a bit disappointed in Mindstrip due to the lack of dance driven tracks. Axis of Evil is another story! Great dark industrial that is dance floor worthy. Hints of Wumpscut and Skinny Puppy are obvious. Highly recommended!!

Cause of album: George W. Bush, of course.,
By
This review is from: Axis of Evil (Audio CD)
With Bush being re-elected, you can bet that the industrial music world is seething beyond control. So far we've had Suicide Commando's Axis of Evil, Skinny Puppy's The Greater Wrong of the Right, FLA's Civilization, and even Ministry put out an album where every song has a 'W' in it.
We get it. The dark, industrial players are not Bush fans (as if Bush is affecting their record sales now, I'm sure). Nevertheless, this album is definitely a bit darker than Mindstrip, its mind is in a darker, more demented place with songs about--surprise--suicide, the axis of evil (or evils), not so hidden references to everyone's favorite Crawford, TX sock puppet, etc. This is not primarily a dance album, but some of the songs are just fine, unless you're offended by references to plastic Christs, or the New World Order, etc. It's dark, it's cynical, it's a sometimes-needed shot in your arm musically if you get too optimistic about life. I find FLA's offerings consistently better, but for different reasons. Commando is not happy, and with four more years, we can be guaranteed another dark, thumping, tearing onslaught. Jesus, start weeping. |
