This review is from: Axis VCS-B Vortex Boom Cymbal Stand
I'm 59 years old and still gigging most Fridays and Saturdays. My 70-pound hardware bag was becoming a serious issue. I've now replaced my snare stand, hi-hat stand and ride cymbal stands with Axis products. I've used their kick pedal for 15 years and have never done a thing to it; no lubrication, no parts replacement. This boom stand is reflective of their quality; ingenious design, precisely machined parts and super light weight, what with the mostly aircraft aluminum materials. The only issue I have (which removed one star) is that the final link in the stand, the all-important boom, is a solid steel but very thin rod. It's easily strong enough to support my heavy, 22" Zildjian ride, but it "gives", meaning that with hard and fast playing, especially moving back and forth from cymbal body to bell, the cymbal will rock a bit on the boom. I have not found this to affect my playing, but it's a bit odd to have the ride bouncing under my stick.
The base of the stand is rock solid and the height adjustment sleeves and wing nuts are the same. The boom tilter is very easily adjustable and also locks positively. The cymbal mounting felts and wing nut are cleverly designed to mount quickly, provide a good playing angle and protect the cymbal. Again, I've shedded over 15 pounds from my gig bag by switching to Axis and, if my kick pedal's any indication, I'll be using these stands till I drop...
