Irman Schmidt - 'Axolotl Eyes' (Mute), June 5, 2010
This review is from: Axolotl Eyes (CD/DVD) (Audio CD)
Let me understand - is this CD a newer release from Irmin Schmidt? Because if it is in fact a modern day effort from the former Can keyboardist, 'Axolotl Eyes' is more accessible than I had expected - in other words, it's not AS weird as one might have thought it might be. Tracks here that prove this over-seventy (now) player can still put some worthy music out some forty + years after he first began are "Kick On The Flood", the eight-minute title cut "Axolotl Eyes", "Etruriz Waltz" and the awesome "Umbillicus" (almost worth the admission price alone). Line-up: Schmidt - keyboards, piano & slide guitar, Ian Dixon - trumpet and Paul Fredericks - vocals. Then there's the DVD - now this is something that I had a really tough time following. I obviously got more from the CD. This has to be one of the strangest covers I've ever seen.
