3.0 out of 5 stars A Fine piece of 80's melodic metal history!
This is much better than the first Giuffria album. With this one they toughened up their guitar sound a bit. This album is a great example of 80's metal. The keyboards sound great, but on certain song it's a bit over done.
1.No escape(9/10)Stars out with a keyboard intro and then bursts into a great rocker!
2.Love You Forever(5/10)Sappy love ballad.Your girlfriend...

Even though their first album contained the fantastic "Call To The Heart", I found "S+S" better overall. This re-mastered edition also contains a bonus track they contributed to the "Gotcha!" soundtrack.

This is one of my favorite albums from 1986; if you like Night Ranger's early albums as well as powerful melodies with rich keyboard and guitar textures, and fantastic vocals, grab this!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Melodic 80's Rock n Roll, January 9, 2003

I love this cd.It is classic 1980's rock. I first bought this cassette in 1986 and just recently bought this on cd. This was a great strong follow up album to their debut cd Giuffria from 1984. This album is a mix of melodic hard rock and power ballads mixed with excellent synthesizers by Gregg Giuffria and great vocals by Glen David Eisley. I like all songs on this cd,but I especially love TELL IT LIKE IT IS,LETHAL LOVER,NO ESCAPE,GIRL,and ON THE RADIO. These 5 tunes really kick. This cd is a great listening experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great reissue, allowing one to enjoy "Silk and Steel" to the maximum, September 12, 2011
By
Nikiforos V. Skoumas (Athens Greece, Cambridge UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
"Silk and Steel" is the second album by American AOR/melodic hard rock band "Giuffria" originally released in 1986. This is a 2010 reissue by "Metal Blade" records featuring one bonus track. "Giuffria" was the outfit of white rock keyboardist Greg Giuffria, an established rock musician since the late 70s as a member of Christian metal band "Angel". His band would later serve as the foundation for the formation of AOR/melodic hard rock super-group "House of Lords". The line up on this second album features guitar wizard Lanny Cordola, bassist David Sikes, drummer Alan Krigger and the amazing vocal talent of David Glen Eisley alongside Greg.

Often obscured by their platinum debut album, "Silk and Steel" pushed the creative boundaries of "Giuffria" into a thicker, more arena-rock sound, drawing closer to the sound of early "House of Lords". Still, the AOR atmosphere is never undermined thanks to the stimulating keyboard harmonies and Eisley's vocal performance. "Heartache" is the slow, melody-driven drama with a super infectious chorus, "Lethal lover" is the up-tempo glam metal attack, "Radio" is an equally heavy though substantially happier rocker, and there is of course "Change of Heart". Arguably the album's strongest moment, "Change of Heart" is an AOR masterpiece where the entire band shines though the undeniably protagonist is Eisley whose vocal performance is nothing less than monumental.

This reissue also benefits from great stereo sound quality, surprisingly clear and thick for `80s recordings allowing one to play the album even louder without loss in audio fidelity. "Silk and Steel" is easily amongst the greatest works in the "Giuffria-House of Lords" album catalogue while the given reissue stands as the ideal opportunity to obtain a previously out-of-print classic.

One of the best from the '80s. Guitars that go from blazing to romantic ... to blazing again ... scorching keyboards from Gregg Giuffria, one of the most talented ever in the business, great drumming ... impassioned, excellent vocals from David Glen Eisley .. Emotion from the vocal, the lyrics, the melodies. "Change Of Heart" .. 'Nuff said

5.0 out of 5 stars Giuffria Does It Again!, September 8, 2005
This review is from: Silk and Steel (Audio CD)
Giuffria was in essence a super group of musicians. Gregg Giuffria has been in (Angel, House Of Lords & Keel), David Glen Eisley has been in (Dirty White Boy, Friderikson/Phillips, Murder's Row & Elements Of Friction), Craig Goldy has been in (Dio & His own cd's), Alan Krigger (Just Giuffria) & Chuck Wright has been in (Bad Moon Rising, Doro, Impellitteri, House Of Lords, Kelly Keeling, Ted Nugent, Magdalen, Magdallan, Murder's Row & Quiet Riot). I prefer this cd to the Self Titled one before it. It has a more polished & radio friendly feel to it. It is getting harder & harder to find since Axe Killer went out of business & the MCA version is long out-of-print & impossible to find. So, if you can find them collect them because they will be worth a lot of money in the near future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Giuffria Tribute, July 5, 2001
This review is from: Silk and Steel (Audio CD)
Excellent album. Silk + Steel, along with Giuffria themselves, never got the recognition they both deserved. First of all, Giuffria's first album was awesome! But, in my opinion, Silk + Steel is the better of the two. It's so sad MCA records didn't promote Giuffria more (if any) than they did. Giuffria is one of the best bands from the '80s. Silk + Steel is their proof. Anyone who knows who Giuffria is will agree... Thanks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great 80's CD, December 26, 2000
By
This review is from: Silk and Steel (Audio CD)
I have been looking for this CD for around 15 years. I owned this tape back in '85 I believe and I Thought and still think that it is one of the best "hard-Glamour" rock albums of the time. It has hard hitting drums and hard guitar rifts, ahead of it's time. Greg Giuffria and his very 80's voice sets the music off just right. All and all one of the best albums I had ever owned back in the 80's, almost as impressive as my best 80's band Stryper.

Unfortunately, this one became unavailable before ours was shipped, so I never heard the remaster, but the album is still a great one. I still intend to get the new one if it becomes available again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vision and Character of a Talented Keyboard Player..., May 18, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Silk and Steel (Audio CD)
What did this CD make me think of?... basically two things:
1. The great kind of rock composer Gregg Giuffria is, so the question is Why then his low writing level, and lack of participation as first line composer with ANGEL? or could it have been that only Frank Dimino or Punky meadows dominated this ANGEL's music field? and,
2. What if all these songs had been performed by ANGEL? Could you imagine a track like "Do Me Right" played by ANGEL? Could all these material had helped to preserve the name, and the fantastic music band that ANGEL was once?...
I don't have all the answers for these questions, but every time I listen this tracks, a nostalgic kind of ideas come to my mind, thinking of what could have been... (I'd really loved that ANGEL had played all these tracks)
The only thinking that I can write is that SILK + STEEL, the second Giuffria release, presented a more matured musical concept with better soft and hard songs than the first GIUFFRIA release. The Singer of the band really can sing hard musical passages or soft melodic paths (a mixture of David Coverdale with Steve Perry). All the arrangement keyboards really dressed intelligently the music, giving it not only the vision and character of Giuffria musicianship for the decade, but making all his music a kind of harbinger for the Rock music future...or what the Hard Rock music became in 80's: Heavy Metal!

My favorite tracks: "Tell It Like It Is", "No Escape", "Dirty Secrets", "Change Of Heart" and "Lethal Lover". This edition presents a good quality case and an information sleeve but didn't present the name of band members, so you can't realize if the first line up of GIUFFRIA continued on SILK & STEEL... Good Luck!
