5.0 out of 5 stars Queen of Salsa Reigns
From the opening rhythms of Azucar Negra I couldn't stay still, I danced around the kitchen, I grooved in the car. Whether you want to salsa under the stars on a balmy night or even if housework calls and you need to tap into some of that Cuban energy, Celia Cruz delivers a consistent collection of tracks to lift the spirit and move the feet.

3.0 out of 5 stars Celia's disappointing debut album for RMM Records.
This was Celia's debut CD for the RMM Records label and includes the big hits "Sazon", "Cruz De Navajas" and "Bolero, Bolero". For better or worse, this album was an unapologetically commercial one and it lacks the rootsy, classic Cuban music-flavored sound that epitomized her work with Johnny Pacheco or the robust, hard-driving New York Salsa sound that was so...

4.0 out of 5 stars Buena mezcla de ritmos diferentes, December 2, 2001
This review is from: Azucar Negra (Audio CD)

This was Celia's debut CD for the RMM Records label and includes the big hits "Sazon", "Cruz De Navajas" and "Bolero, Bolero". For better or worse, this album was an unapologetically commercial one and it lacks the rootsy, classic Cuban music-flavored sound that epitomized her work with Johnny Pacheco or the robust, hard-driving New York Salsa sound that was so characteristic of her work with Ray Barretto and Willie Colon. Yes, Celia was one of those few and rare artists with whom it was virtually impossible to make a bad record but this album was quite a disappointment in comparison to her 1974-1992 recordings for the Fania and Vaya labels.

When I heard the song Te Busco in the movie Lantana, I just had to have it but I didn't know that it was not part of the soundtrack. It was only available on the Azucar Negra CD and... am I glad that I bought that CD. Celia Cruz is phenomenal and there are so many cuts that are my favorites now that I listen to it in the car, in the office, at home. Finally, a CD that I can enjoy from beginning to end!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tremenda voz, June 5, 2003

Here in Miami, we are lucky to be able to listen to these artists all day long. Many years ago, I all but wore this tape out play it endlessly on a loop. I recommend it.

Purchased this just to the the song, Te Busco, the one featured at the end of Lantana (it's a great movie). It's perfection.

this up-beat down to earth mix of latin percussion busts beats into and out of your ear with such rythymn and flavor that it makes you want to get up and move.

The group Azucar Negra is a spinoff of Bamboleo. This record is stunning. The songs "Tan Solo Tu" and "Havana Lima" are worth the price of this CD. Buy this one now before it goes out of print.
