HEZEKIAH WALKER
AZUSA THE NEXT GENERATION

In the often-egomaniacal world of music it’s rare to find an iconic artist who is as altruistic as he is talented, but Grammy Award winning choir director and church pastor Hezekiah Walker is such an exception. Over an almost three decades long career, Walker has collaborated with Justin Timberlake, P. Diddy and Whitney Houston; recorded ... Read more in Amazon's Hezekiah Walker Store

Editorial Reviews

Named after what has been called the origin of the Pentecostal movement, Azusa: The Next Generation is a musical representation of what Azusa became. Started in Los Angeles in 1906 as a small bible study, what became known as the Azusa Street Revival blossomed into an annual event, drawing people from all over the world and crossing racial barriers.

Hezekiah Walker last year led the Azusa revival in his hometown of New York, and thousands attended. He assembled a choir, and the result was a new body of work that encompasses the spirit and fellowship of Azusa. Hez once again teamed up with multiple Stellar Award winning producer Donald Lawrence; and the album also features guest artists such as Donnie McClurkin, Deitrick Haddon and John P. Kee. Hezekiah's last release "Souled Out" from 2008 was a huge success, scanning over 260,000 and featuring two of his biggest hits, "God Favored Me" and the title track "Souled Out".

4.0 out of 5 stars Great album....but...... June 11, 2013
Format:Audio CD
When I purchase gospel music, I like to be fair and honest when it comes to sharing a review on an album. Regardless of if I know the artist personally (and in this case I do, he was my Pastor since I was a teenager and Im 35 now AND I was on the Tabernacle Choir right up until I went away to college)I never want my review to be biased.

Honestly, this album is just ok for me. In a day in age when Israel and Kurt Carr are putting out double CD's with 20+ tracks, Im a little disappointed that Bishop Walker only gives us 10 tracks, and its not even a solid 10 tracks. He didn't leave room for me to NOT like some songs while falling in love with the songs I like. You see, when you take away Break Every Chain (Umm Tasha Combs version is the one everyone loves), No Greater Love (no one really cares to listen to a club song so to speak), we are only left with 8 workable songs. That's not enough in my view. Below you will find my take on each song.

Every Praise
New Yorkers (and basically everyone on the North East Coast) have been singing this song for years. Its a hot song and the words have meaning, I just don't care for remakes of songs that already exist. Still, the production of the song sounds real "Hezzie" so I give it a B+

Break Every Chain
Cant stand Detrick Haddons song, really don't want to hear anything with him on it given his public scandal, and Tasha Combs version of the song is the better option. I give this version an F- because it was a waste of a track especially since Tasha Combs has already made the song so uber popular.

I Feel Your Spirt
A++++++++ This is Bishop Kenneth Moals meets New Orleans meets the United House Of Prayer "Shout Band" meets Hezekiah Walker. Excellent song. I do have one suggestion.

This CD speaks to ALL the congregation from the praise team, sanctuary choir, to the mothers/fathers of the church and the youth of the church!!! Impeccable harmonies you expect from a work of Bishop Hezekiah Walker!!!! The current single "Every Praise" is truly amazing, "I Feel Your Spirit" is a nod to the Old School church and all can join in and enjoy, "More Than A Conqueror" reminds us that w/God we can overcome anything...a strong anthem for all, "Lead Me to that Rock" is great, upbeat jam that Bishop is known for in his career, "Breakthrough" featuring Donnie McClurkin is incomparable and his voice has been missed in Gospel music (<3), "Grace" w/Brian Courtney Wilson is a smooth, Gospel jazz that reminds to be grateful for God's grace, "Amazing" is a slow, beautiful piece that all will worship just where you are when you hear it, "Work In Your Favor" w/Pastor John P. Kee is an encouraging upbeat with awesome tight harmonies and "No Greater Love" is excellent praise & worship/congregational song to set the atmosphere before The Word is preached!!! Recommended for ALL to enjoy!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Love the songs but not all the "Guests". September 22, 2013

Lyrics are great, but many of the vocals left me hitting the "track advance" on my player. Too too bad.

Prime Cuts: Every Praise, No Greater Love, Amazing

Every generation has a stewardship obligation. We cannot bear the responsibility of the previous generation and we cannot predict what will happen with the next. But with our present generation we have an onus to invest our talents, time and opportunities to ensure that God's work continue to prosper beyond our existence. Such is the alacritous heart's cry of two-time Grammy winner and multiple Stellar Award winner Hezekiah Walker. And this is the heartbeat of the Walker organized annual Azusa the Next Generation conferences. Each year prominent pastors, speakers, worship leaders and thousands of Christians would gather for worship and for calling upon God's revival fire to impact a new generation. Nevertheless, for those of us who are not history buffs, the title of the conference and album needs unpacking. Azusa is earmarked as the catalyst that launched the Pentecostal/charismatic movement. Way back in 1906 there was an unprecedented revival that happened in Azusa Street in Los Angeles under the preaching of William J. Seymour that lasted for almost ten years. This revival birthed what is today known as the Pentecostal church which has at least 500 million adherents across the globe arguably the fastest growing sector in Christendom.

One of the key characteristics of the original Azusa revival was their emphasis of dynamic worship. Walker on this brand new album, his first since "Souled Out" which was released nearly five years ago, tries to do just that. With Bishop Walker at the helm, you can be assured that the worship is never pusillanimous. Rather, stomping heaven with some jamming Gospel thunder, Walker's 14th album "Azusa the Next Generation" is a bold worship fest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Praise and Worship Project. July 8, 2013
By Wardell
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
There is something for everyone on this project. Old school gospel sound by Butch Hayward. A Churchy song, I feel the Spirit. Also fantastic Praise and Worship songs that will be done in many churches.
