TIGHT!, May 11, 2001
This review is from: Azz Izz (Audio CD)
Mokenstef was one of the premiere groups of the 1990's, very talented vocally. Althought most people consider them a one-hit onder with "He's Mine," people who follow the R&B charts know that "Sex in the Rain," and the "He's Mine" remix also charted very well. Mokenstef hasnt't made an album since their debut, and I sadly thought they had broken up. However, about a week and a half ago, I saw them open for Lil' Kim. They sang some stuff from their upcoming album and all I can say is watch out! They have updated their style with a Destiny's Child meets Foxy Brown type sound. They are definately a little more hardcore now, but they have kept their harmony intact. No one was more excited than I was when i saw them live and in awesome form. This CD is a must have for any R&B collector, for "He's Mine" alone, and I'm positive interest in tis CD is going to increase once the new album drops and the girls finnally get their due, because they were looking and sounding [great]! "He might be doing you but hes thinking about me" "He's mine you may have had him once but I got him all the time....." CLASSIC!

The Ballads Jam On This Disc., June 21, 2005
This review is from: Azz Izz (Audio CD)
I would purchase this CD again because of the slow jams, He's Mine and Sex In The Rain, (Both of which you can get on CD Single). I also liked, It Happens, and Just Be Gentle. Some of the other songs are less than can be desired. I believe that is more of a production problem than a singing problem. These ladies sound great with the right material. (Updated on 12-13-08) This disc is growing on me like a fine wine, so I am updated my rating to 4 stars. The ballads still jam on this disc, so add this disc to your collection.

Promising Debut!, January 21, 2004
This review is from: Azz Izz (Audio CD)
In '95, the urban market was saturated with girl groups. The premiere groups (SWV, Xscape, and TLC) were the standard. But other groups emerged (Pure Soul, Kut Klose, Blackgirl), looking to cash in on the girl group demand. With that said, Mokenstef fits into the latter category.
They managed to manufacture one big hit in their 2nd single "he's mine". Peaking at #2 r&b, the slow-burning tune was all the rage on slow jam radio in '95. With its memorable chorus, silky smooth harmony, and convincing lead, no wonder it is a classic to this day. Its popularity and clout you have would think it is the best track on the album. It isn't. That title belongs to "Baby Come Close". Normally, covers are not better than the original, but mokenstef proves that it can be done. Other tracks worth listening to are the 1st single "sex in the rain" and the pop-laced "it happens".
With all of their star-studded slow jams, it's a shame that their midtempo portion is all but memorable. The rapping is simple, the choruses are unmelodic, and the production is sparse. It's safe to say their midtempo portion cost them massive commerical success. Nevertheless, Mokenstef had a decent debut, with a hit single and other notable tracks that should have been singles. Unfortunately, they fell through the cracks and will go down as a one-hit wonder.
