4.0 out of 5 stars Worked great
My father in law is VERY deaf. You literally have to speak very loudly right in his ear to get him to hear you. He has tried all kinds of hearing aids with no real improvement. He had to have the TV incredibly loud and still couldn't really hear it. He put these things on and got this huge grin on his face. He said it was the first time he had really heard the news...

3.0 out of 5 stars I like it, but it's got problems!
First off, the listing tells you that the Bebe Sounds TV Listener works with any television. Okay, I guess technically this is true. But, practically, it is not exactly so!

We have an older television in our bedroom and I wanted to be able to listen while my bed partner snoozes. So as not to be disturbing I was turning down the tv so low I couldn't hear...

My father in law is VERY deaf. You literally have to speak very loudly right in his ear to get him to hear you. He has tried all kinds of hearing aids with no real improvement. He had to have the TV incredibly loud and still couldn't really hear it. He put these things on and got this huge grin on his face. He said it was the first time he had really heard the news in a very long time. I believe it helps that these things fit over the ear and help block ambient noise, they don't encapsulate the ear though so they don't block all surrounding noise. They can be worn with a hearing aid as well.

Now the down side. Not rechargeable so you either have to spring for 2 AAA rechargeable batteries and a charger unit or buy a lot of batteries for it. There is no auto shutoff so if you leave it on by accident (switch on headset), there goes a set a batteries.

An update. These things have been great. My mother in law decided she needed her own headset so I bought the entire unit, instead of just another headset. I hooked up the extra base unit to their other TV so now they can take their headsets (set to the volume that is comfortable for each of them) to either TV.

Make sure the user can see the lights on the base unit. If they can't all they will get is static.

Another update. After 2.5 years of very heavy use (lots of TV gets watched there) both headsets have lots of static. I realized that both had been used at or near full volume for all of that time and the internal speakers are simply blown out. Again, these are elderly users who need the amplification so I just bought them another 2 sets. The important thing is that they can both hear the TV and their neighbors can't. If we can get another 2 years out of the new sets, I am very happy. These aren't perfect but they are simple, cheap and work just great for this application.

First off, the listing tells you that the Bebe Sounds TV Listener works with any television. Okay, I guess technically this is true. But, practically, it is not exactly so!

We have an older television in our bedroom and I wanted to be able to listen while my bed partner snoozes. So as not to be disturbing I was turning down the tv so low I couldn't hear it! Since I knew it was an older television and probably didn't have the proper jacks I looked for something specifically for "any" television.

What I found was that if you don't have the proper jacks on your television there is a tiny microphone to put near the tv speaker. You must have the sound on very low (no problem for me) to pick up audio in the headphones. We tried this - and what happens is that the microphone not only picks up the audio on the tv, it picks up all sounds in the room. At one point the dog barked and I almost wet the bed! And my spouse's snoring was amplified over the microphone, just like the tv sounds, which was definitely not good!

So...we switched televisions with one in our guest room. It has a proper jack on the front of the television. We connected it and all I could hear was the radio on my bedside table (which was turned off). We fiddled with it somewhat and I was finally able to hear the television - and the sound came in really, really well!

The second or third night I used it, it dawned on me that the sound was only coming into my left ear. The speaker on the right ear was not working. We called the company and were told that we needed to plug the cord into a surge protector in order to get sound into both ears. (Now, my spouse is an engineer and says this makes absolutely no sense at all.) We haven't tried it yet.

I continue to use the Bebe Sounds, but I am not completely satisfied with it. The sound I get (in one headphone only) is top-notch, very clear. I can doze off to sleep better and my spouse isn't bothered.

But I really believe I should be able to hear from both sides of the headphone or the Bebe Sounds folks should know how to troubleshoot their products better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for TV listening, June 30, 2007

I give this 5 stars because it's perfect for what I need it for - listening to the TV. I almost bought something more expensive and then found this. I am very happy with it. It's very easy to connect if you have a "newer" TV - mine is at least 7 years old and I had no problems connecting it within 2 minutes. Don't know about battery life yet but I think it won't be a problem since I won't be using this daily. This is a great buy if you just want a simple device to listen to the TV.

My mom, 93 years old, already called me twice long distance to tell me how much she loved the BeBe Sounds TV Listener. She said it's the best thing that she has ever received, and she is enjoying being able to listen to the TV and clearly hear it. Other family members also are enjoying the quiet as they no longer have to listen to the TV blaring. I know of two other people who own it and are also very happy with it. It's easy to set up, and the price is right and it does what it says it will do.

5.0 out of 5 stars What great headphones!, August 28, 2006

These headphones amazed me with their clarity and fidelity. When I ordered and paid less than $40 I thought I might have to send these headphones back, but they have excellent sound in each ear, plus they were so easy to install with our TVs that I couldn't believe it. We highly recommend these phones instead of the far more expensive $80 to $200 ones.

I bought this to watch late night tv in my bedroom without disturbing my husband. It's the WORST - every time i move my head, i get static - forget about lying your head on the pillow -it interferes with the infrared . you must keep your head straight up not leaning on anything. oh, and every time my husband moves/rolls over - i lose reception if he gets too close to me because of the infrared. when he rolls on his side his leg may get in the way of the infrared too. i tried moving the "box" that comes with it - just doesn't matter. spend the extra money and get a good one

4.0 out of 5 stars Happy with this purchase, January 15, 2008
This review is from: Unisar Sounds TV Listener (Electronics)
It seems that for some reason this particular type of product, a remote headset for television, does not rank well overall across brands and models. I looked for quite a while and even the more expensive versions don't get very good reviews. So for the price I believe this is a very good purchase.

We have two boys in a smaller house who always end up in the living room while we are watching tv making typical kid noise, loud. Since they don't have a play room it's hard to justify them being mouse quiet while we lounge around watching the tube. So we got these.

On the plus side they are very light, comfortable and get a pretty good reception with minimal static. I've got a pretty fat head and they fit just fine on me, and my wife has a normal size noggin and they fit just fine on her as well. With that we are pretty happy.

On the somewhat negative side there is some static, which really bugs me so maybe it's more my problem then most people. But there is a little static and I would prefer crystal clear. However it just doesn't seem there is a headset out there that provides that, especially at this price. And that really surprises me with our societies love of TV. You'd think by now they'd have this down.

Anyway that's why 4 stars, a little bit of static. But at this time I can't say I would prefer anything else in competition with this, and for the price it looks to be the best buy right now for a TV headset.

Excellent if you're deaf like me. I was keeping the whole house up at night listening to the TV at full volume.
Now I can listen and actually hear better and catch all the action. The noise level in the room without the head set is bearly audible. Great product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bebe Sounds TV Listener a great bargain!, July 8, 2006

This review is from: Unisar Sounds TV Listener (Electronics)
I purchased the TV listener a few months ago for a relative in a physical therapy rehab facility. The rooms are shared, and each has their own television. Depending on your roommates TV preferences and sleeping habits, trying to watch TV can be a nightmare for one or both! This was the perfect solution. No one is disturbed and your TV can be muted while the user can hear at whatever volume suits them over the headphones. The fact that the headphones are wireless ensures no tripping over wires. When I realized it can also be used with the TV sound on, eureka, I had now found the solution to watching TV with my parents, whose hearing is not what it used to be, causing me to suffer the consequences with ear shattering volume. I raced back to the website and bought two more. The only downside is the headphones are large and slightly clunky. Earbuds would make this the perfect product for use while lying in bed. In any case, I LOVE THIS PRODUCT!
