3.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't replace bulb aspirator, January 10, 2008

After using this for about 2 months on our now 6-month old, we are glad that we have this available to us, but the good old hospital bulb aspirator does a better job most of the time. This is because the bulb creates a short, high-velocity suction that causes the rush of air to pull along whatever is "down there" (or is it "up there"?), whereas the battery-operated unit has a constant, low-speed suction that only sucks in what the tip actually contacts.

There is at least one situation where this is an advantage - it worked much better than the bulb when she had a very runny nose due to a cold. In this case, the constant suction really kept pulling out more mucus, whereas the bulb could only suck a little each time.

So overall, we are happy to have another option, but it isn't usually the best tool for the job.

A quick spray or dripping of something like "Little Noses" or "Ocean" saline nasal spray will do the job of loosening up mucus nicely and quickly. Apply a few drops into each nasal passage with baby lying down, let it work for a minute or two, and then suck away using the wide tip rather than the long thin tip. The wide tip forms a better seal over baby's nose and is not as invasive as the longer thinner one. This is a great product for sure!! Soooo much better than the bulbs of old. Quicker to use, so less torture for your baby and when used properly, it gets out so much more mucus than a manual bulb.

4.0 out of 5 stars Musical Snot Sucker, July 5, 2007

I've got to wonder about the person who came up with this little gadget. A musical snot sucker. Genius!

We all know that the blue bulb syringe is a horrible torture for little noses. This battery operated nasal aspirator is a tender answer to infants' prayers. It gently sucks out mucus with the accompaniment of a snippet of music. My daughter is so distracted by the music that she forgets to cry.

My only quibble is that I wish the suction were a little stronger. That is the only thing that moved this rating from 5 to 4 stars. Yet when you compare the product to the bulb syringe, this is a 5 star product all the way. I'm recommending it to all my friends.

This absolutely a great product. We've tried to stay on the "cheap" side by using the bulb every time our son gets sick. And every time I wonder why I didn't get this product as he screams and kicks when we try to use the bulb on him -- It's slow, not as effective and he hates it. Finally I broke down and bought BébéSounds Nasal Clear. Oh boy, what a difference this product has made in just the 1st day of use. It got SO MUCH out in a fraction of the time compared to the bulb!

At first I thought the music feature was such a waste of battery and a superfluous feature. But NOOOOOO... our 2-year-old would only let me suction his nose if the music was playing. We've even made a pact where I'd like him press the music button if he lets me do the suction for the duration of the music... Cool!

I am not sure why the other reviewer had a hard time getting anything out of his/her infant. But do keep in mind that for best results, the other nasal cavity plus the mouth would have to be temporarily closed for optimal effect. Just imagine how we blow our nose -- it's just not practical if you try to blow your nose while you're still breathing through your mouth! We taught our son to say "mmmmm" while we quickly apply the BébéSounds Nasal Clear on him and repeat it until we thought we got as much as we could.

If you are still sitting on the sidelines waiting to get this, don't wait -- get it. It will save you time and hassle. And it will also make your infant/toddler happier without having to go through the ineffectiveness of the bulb...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!, April 13, 2007
This review is from: Bébésounds Nasal Clear Battery Operated Nasal Aspirator (Baby Product)
both my 4 year old and my little daughter 5 month old hate having their noses suctioned! My little girl has reflux and spits up a lot, due to that she always has quite some Milkbuggers up her nose and to add to that, she's teething like a Mammoth right now which makes her congested as well. First she wanted to sqirm away, but the hummingsound that comes from it and the nice Tune it plays destracted her! Since it vibrates quite a bit I first touch her cheek with it so she knows what to expect and she immidetly calmes down and today started even to giggle because it tickled her nose!

The long and short tip are both very soft and have no sharp edges and the suction is very gentle. Yes, I do agree that it won't suck crusties out of the nose but even with a bulb, hard stuff should be soaked for a couple of seconds with a squirt of saline up the nose to soften it. Once you do that the bigger buggers will come out with the big tip!

I personally find the Bulbs to invasive and the aspirators in Hospital pretty strong, so strong that not even the stuff will use them unless the Babys oxygen drops due to stuffiness in the nose! I KNOW I just spent 1 week in the hospital in February with my duaghter due to RSV, and yes those aspirators there shouldn't be used unless there is no other way (but even there they use always saline first to soften the stuff and then use the suction)

Oh, by the way, the Aspirator comes with a handy little sack to store the tips and the easy to take apart and clean Aspirator! sure, the Suction is not as strong as the Hospital one but the Hospital cannot be used as often as you want to, this one is gentle enough and even fun for the little ones while giving them relieve and can be used as needed it is that gentle! That's why it gets 5 stars from me!

5.0 out of 5 stars So much better than a manual aspirator, April 3, 2007
By
This review is from: Bébésounds Nasal Clear Battery Operated Nasal Aspirator (Baby Product)
I am a first time parent of a 4 month old. I was surprised to learn that babies can't clear their own noses until they are about 3 years old. I tried using the manual bulb aspirator but my little one would get frustrated and I would have limited success clearing his nose. It usually took several attempts to get into the nostril and once there, I was only able to get good suction about 1/3 of the time. Maybe others have better luck than me but these are my stats.

I ordered the NasalClear about a week ago. I was concerned that the vacuum might be too strong for little noses or that the tips would be too invasive. The vacuum is very gentle. I prefer the shorter, stouter tip as it seems less likely to go too far up the nostril. Either tip is certainly shorter than the one on the manual bulb. The suction, while being gentle, is very effective at cleaning the nostril. I was surprised by how much a little nostril could hold. That being said, the NasalClear comes with a collecion cup that has a max fill line on it that seems absurdly large. I have yet to get even a drop into the chamber (there is quite a bit of storage space in the tubes leading to the chamber that does get filled) so I can't even imagine filling it.

I don't find the music feature to be very important.

It's a great product that works well and doesn't irritate my baby. So far, there hasn't been a tear caused by NasalClear--which is a huge improvement over the manual bulb.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works well on my toddler, January 27, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
When I read the description for this, it said that this aspirator was safe for infants and I wondered whether it would be strong enough for my son, who is a few months from age 3. It does have pretty good suction and works well, even on a toddler. There are 2 tips and the larger tip fits him and I think would still fit him when he's years older. The music function didn't work at first, but it just started working after a few uses - although that function doesn't really interest me.

As an infant, my son was in the hospital and they had this great aspirator that attached to suction coming from the wall. I wanted something like that but I was wary of those suction devices that work with your vacuum cleaner - just too noisy and risky to me. So this was the only other option I could find and I couldn't find any reviews for it. But I got it anyway and I'm happy with it. It is easy to clean and removes snot well. I would recommend anyone using this on their child to use saline drops first to loosen the mucus...otherwise the constant suction on something that has thickened would probably be painful for your kid. It does have a little noise with it which infants might not like, but maybe the music helps with that. It sounds kind of like a vibrating cell phone. My son isn't bothered by it and even likes using it at times. I don't think it removes stuff that you couldn't already get with a traditional nose sucker though, it just is faster - you don't have to keep sucking and squirting like you do with a regular sucker.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not awful, but not as great as I thought, May 6, 2007
I was really excited about this product because having to extract stuff from my infants nose can be a terrible experience for both of us. It promised to clear the nasal passage so quick it was as if it was done before you even touched the baby's nose. The mucous comes out ok, but then it never makes it to the collection cup. It gets stuck in the passageway to the cup and then clogs and has to be cleaned - which is disgusting. I use it sometimes but I still have to use the regular old aspirator as well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great - When it works! Loses Plastic Ring that gives it suction too often!, February 28, 2009
By
This review is from: Bébésounds Nasal Clear Battery Operated Nasal Aspirator (Baby Product)
Okay so I love this product when it works. I have a 5 month old and used it for 2 days when she was a month old and then it stopped sucking and I couldn't figure out why so I called customer service and she asked if there was a white rubber ring on the inside where the "collection bulb" screws on and I said no that I had never noticed one and had only washed it out 3 times in the sink with hot water and I would think that it would have gotten caught around the sink drain before it would go down. Nonetheless, she sent me a new one and the suction returned - I was pleased. So now my daughter has a stuffy nose again so I brought it out again yesterday and used it, rinsed it out - used it a few hours later, rinsed it out - each time holding my finger over the ring so it wouldn't come out - I tried to pay CLOSE attention to that blasted ring. Well, when I went back to put it back together again after it dried, the darn ring was gone and of course, so was the suction!! I could just cuss someone as I know that even if they send me another one it will be a week!!! I looked everywhere - and the drain is a SMALL drain that shouldn't have allowed this little rubber ring to go down without some forcing!! This is a SEVERE FLAW in this stupid little machine, as it is also supposedly dishwasher safe - are you really going to remember to remove the ring each time? Honestly, they should sell packs of 10 rings at the stores for this darn thing! The ring issue is why it got 3 stars instead of 5 - maybe if they go ahead and give you a few extra rings in the package it would be best. I like that the tips don't "poke" your childs brain like those nasal aspirators do!
