5.0 out of 5 stars Patches, Patches, Patches, February 7, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: B-17 FLYING FORTRESS - THE MIGHTY 8TH (Video Game)
This game is dated and the graphics are as such, but for the feeling of actually being in charge of ten guys in a WWII bomber you cannot beat it. If you actually want to pilot the plane and use all the many controls you had better be one fine sim pilot because the task is daunting. But if you let the computer take some of the workload and move from station to station in the aircraft it is an eerie time warp back to 1944 as the crew turns to look at you and says, Hey pal, my life is in your hands, make a decision. This is no game for kids and it's not an arcade shoot em up. It is more like a movie unfolding and you are writing the script. I found it disquieting at times and enjoy the reality of the game. It's for real. However, with out 4 different Patches it would not run on my computer so go to The Scrolls and patch away.If you enjoy reality shows about 1944, this one's for you

4.0 out of 5 stars B-17 The Mighty Eighth, March 9, 2009
By
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: B-17 FLYING FORTRESS - THE MIGHTY 8TH (Video Game)
I bought this game several years ago when it was marketed by Hasbro. As to what the problems with it now are I couldn't say. I run XP and my older version works fine on it. The game is actually a simulation more so than a arcade type shooter. You start your missions in the squad room, are given a booklet in game that identifies your first and secondary targets along with maps displaying waypoints and the bomb drop locations. You can take command in the pilot's seat or co-pilots and actually set your levels to start the engines, taxi and take off. If being a bombadier is your thing you can move from the pilot's position and use a detailed Norton Bomb Sight to zero in on the target and drop the patyload. All the while dealing with flak and the inevitable attack by German fighters who being madder than wet hornets are hell bent on seeing to it you don't get home once you've finished bombing. This game even affords you the opportunity to hop into the seat of one of the several fighters who will be accompanying you on your mission of try the seat of a German fighter and attack the B-17 formation.
Your crew can be wounded or become so unerved that you have to relieve them and render first aid to either patch their injuires or get them calmed down due to shattered nerves. You experience fires on board and are tasked with putting them out to ensure you get back to your base across the Channel.
You B-17 also takes realistic damage and I've come in for a landing on literally a wing and a prayer. You can allow the AI to fly the plane while you man any one of the several gunners positions. Just know that unless you yourself sit in the Bombadiers seat and drop your eggs on that U-Boat pen, you may very well miss and find yourself having to return to complete the job on another mission.
I enjoy this game and every so often rev up the engines and fly off with my other squadron mates to win the war and hope I come back alive.

This review is from: B-17 FLYING FORTRESS - THE MIGHTY 8TH (Video Game)
The addictive part of this game is that it's not really
a game...you're the invisible 11th man, the commander on the
plane..so if you miss your target with you as bombadier, you
want to immied. refly...

The reason I derate this game is that you go out with 10
B-17's.....They all drop their bombs on your drop, but only
your bombs explode on target....so even if you hit the target
it will be mostly recorded as less than totally destoyed....
