Book Description

December 1986
The B-24 Liberator was the most widely used four-engined aircraft of World War II, with a total of 19,256 being built. Built with Pacific distances in mind, the B-24 had a very long range and served the U.S. Army Air Force in both Europe and the Pacific, and also equipped RAF squadrons in Burma. The true character of such a long-serving aircraft cannot be deduced from its technical specifications, and this classic account draws on many first-hand experiences of those who actually flew the plane. The B-24's most important moments are covered, along with less well-known operations, all backed up with numerous photographs.

4.0 out of 5 stars B-24 Versatile Bomber, November 6, 2009
By
This review is from: B-24 Liberator at War (Hardcover)
There is always an argument - which US bomber was better - the B-17 or B-24? Depends on what you are looking for, this book shows that very well. The B-17 was more famous "Flying Fortress" could fly at higher altitudes and take more punishment, but had a shorter range and lighter bomb load.

Over 19,000 of the B-24's were built. Used in every theater, they also were excellent naval patrol aircraft due to their range. A slighter more modern design than the B-17, the thin wings of the B-24 were also its most vulnerable point. They tended to snap under attack from German fighters.

This book is a very good read on a very useful bomber. I liked the many clear black and white photos, the captions were helpful. Photos showed the plane in every theater and the inside of each crew member position. This is not a nuts and bolts book on the development or each version of the plane.

I wished for some color photos, more line drawings, but as a narrative, this is a very good introduction to the B-24 and a balanced account of a useful plane made in huge numbers that helped the Allies win.
