Book Description

March 2000

"B-24 Liberator In Detail And Scale," Squadron/Signal Publications.

The B-24 Liberator was one of the most modified aircraft in military
history. Including the Navy's PB4Y-2 Privateer, no less than ten different
versions were produced, and these had numerous variations depending on which
version was involved, where they were built, and may have been modified in the
field. The design of the bomb aiming windows, and even how the anti-glare panel
was painted on natural metal aircraft, varied even on the same version of the
Liberator depending on the mfr of that particular aircraft.

FEATURES: Information on the B-24 Liberator aircraft, built by Consolidated.
Filled with specifications, facts and pictures, including a 16-page
color center section showing different markings and configurations.
A very handy guide for modelers trying for true scale appearance!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nuts-and-Bolts Guide to the B-24!, April 21, 2009
This review is from: B-24 Liberator in detail & scale - D&S Vol. 64 (Paperback)
When Bert Kinzey's line of 'Detail & Scale' publications moved to Squadron/Signal, it was a win-win decision all around. Kinzey's books were well-known for their comprehensive, accurate texts, wealth of illustrations and nicely-done scale drawings by Lloyd S. Jones. Coming under the S/S umbrella meant the addition of Don Greer color profiles. Win-Win! B-24 LIBERATOR is a good example of the new arrangement, being a first-rate nut-and-bolts guide to Consolidated's slabsided Liberator.

B-24 LIBERATOR packs a lot of information in its 80 pages. After a brief development history, Kinzey describes the B-24A, Liberator II/LB-30, B-24C, B-24D, etc. along with the transport, photo-recce, experimental and Navy patrol bomber models like the XB-24K, C-87, F-7, PBY-1, etc. And there's a section on B-24 models as well.

Kinzey's book is crammed with lots of vintage and contemporary b&w and color photographs including close-in detail shots and three-views as well. The color section runs to 16 pages and includes two pages of super Don Greer color profiles. Visually, as with other Detail & Scale titles, B-24 LIBERATOR is a treat!

Bomber buffs will enjoy this tribute to the Liberator. It's a fine, one-stop shopping guide to a great warbird. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars B-24 Liberator Bomber, December 19, 2010

This review is from: B-24 Liberator in detail & scale - D&S Vol. 64 (Paperback)
The Detail and Scale series by Squadron Signal are longer than the In Action Series books, but have less color than the Walk Around series. This book on the B-24 is very good. It covers all of the versions of the B-24 from prototype to the end of the 18,000 planes that were built. There are 14 pages of color photos, 2 pages of color line drawings that show the camouflage pattern used during the war. Navy versions (the Privateer) and British Libs are included as well.

I liked the coverage of the engines, wheel wells, cockpits, interior of the plane and dimensional line drawings of each variant. Very helpful for would be modelers. Indeed, one page addresses different scale models that are on the market. Some of the photos are original WW2 shots, some are of museum planes. My only criticism is that the pictures tend to be small, but then again, that is the trade off buying a shorter book on this plane.

An affordable but comprehensive coverage for a book that manages to cover much material in 80 pages. Definitely recommended for Liberator buffs, modelers and aviation buffs.
