Outstanding Resource for WWII enthusiasts,
By
This review is from: The B-29 Superfortress: A Comprehensive Registry of the Planes and Their Missions (Hardcover)
Mr. Mann has, with this superlative, book given me the tool I need I match my extensive B-29 photo collection to the "noseart" and serial numbers. This allows me to identify which B-29 belongs in it's assigned squadron and it's genisis. Invaluable when deciphering cryptic crew and mission reports as to which each Superfortress' role was in WWII, Korea and it's extended service as weather ship and air re-fueling tanker.
Thanks, Mr Mann for the thousands of hours of getting it right. Col. Bill Copeland Commemorative Air Force

This book is a cross reference for all B-29's produced. Its lists the planes by aircract number and plane artwork and gives the dates of production, where they were assigned and what missions they flew. If you are looking for resources to help you find out what your relatives did in World War II, then this is a great place to start.

Having flown a B-29 during the Korean war I wanted to find out what happened to some of the 98th bomb group aircraft. My aircraft "Good Old Gus was listed but no serial number or status was noted. Also the details of the final status of the aircrcaft are not detailed.
I think the cost of the book should be reduced. .

I'm So Glad This Book Exists,

This book is at the very high end of what I would usually spend on a book. But I understand the price. The information is invaluable. I'm able to cross-reference almost any detail of my grandfather's plane, find out what happened to it and so on. I'm able to see the missions, and who participated. It really fills in so many blanks. It is a bargain for anyone connected to the B-29. If you have no such connection, and just an interest, don't bellyache over the price. It's not for you anyhow. It was clearly a labor of love for those that have a love, not a passing interest.

I was very pleased to discover this book on Amazon. I am working on a family history of my uncle, a Pacific B-29 air commander (pilot), who made it clear through all the WWII bombing missions but whose plane went down, due to engine fire and failure, while voluntarily flying supplies to our U.S. POW's in Japan during the first week of September 1945.
Not many U.S. Army Air Force records have survived since a large warehouse fire in Texas, some years ago, caused the accidental destruction of the majority of them. The information in this book has allowed me to be able to determine what missions my uncle, and his crew, were performing on specific days of the war. This additional data has been invaluable. I have also mentioned this book to a former B-29 pilot who is an elderly acquaintance of mine living in our small town. He, too, wants to explore the book to recapture some specifics of what missions he performed on certain days. Many thanks to the author for this book! I do have to say I posted a request some months ago for it to be published on Kindle; but thus far, it isn't available in that format so I finally purchased the actual book. |
