5.0 out of 5 stars BB King at his best, March 3, 2002
By
This review is from: B.B. King - Live in Africa [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is THE BB King video to own. Believe me, all others pale into insignificance in comparison. Anyone who has watched "when we were kings" about the rumble in the jungle, will have caught a glimpse of the great man playing "sweet sixteen", even though the director sadly cut most of it out of the final cut. Quite simply, BB plays his heart out. Lacking some of his more veteran musicians, and baring in mind that he is at this stage performing around 300 concerts every year, the show is stupendous. There are so many things to watch out for. BB plays with such grace, and with such control. Constantly tweaking the volume button on Lucille, louder then softer, in fact so soft that i doubt that many of the 100,000 africans heard some of his more sensitive licks and runs. But with the video, nothing is lost. He seems to select a strange set, and on reading his choices of tracks, you may not think this is the best of BB, but you would be wrong. "sweet sixteen" is there, so is "guess who". But others like "i love to live the life i sing about" would seem out of place...until you see him perform them. only BB at his best could take such songs with actually weak lyrics and turn all of them into show stoppers. His solo's are incredible, building, building, building and then...bam! the whole band are right there, and you have been tapping your feet, sitting on the edge of your seat for 45 minutes flat.
oh, and don't forget to watch the band conductor, he is hilarious. He has this huge brass orchestra to control, and does so with such ease. Even when BB decides to ad lib a little longer than planned, you can see him in the background, holding up his hands.....waiting, holding them all back, until the moment is right, and then cuts them all free again.

If you don't want to take my word for it, look out for Ali, jumping up and down in the audience after another blistering track draws to a close.

Do the smart thing, and get hold of this, and make everyone you know watch it. This is what music is all about. This is talent, this is a maestro, this is BB King!
