Editorial Reviews

B.C. is one of the longest-running daily comic newspaper strips, written by Johnny Hart since 1958. The comic strip B.C comes to life in this half hour animated special, made for television. As the show starts out, the ants are looking through a Stone Henge type structure, ant sized, and exclaim that the morning star is off by 2.5 degrees and scurry off in a panic. Thor sees this and is trying to find his calendar he loaned out. He asks Clumsy who has his head under water, asks Fat Broad, BC, Curls, Cute Chick, and finally Peter who has it on the wall showing Dec. 24 as the date. Meanwhile an ant is working out and makes so much commotion a flower pops up beneath him. Peter is intrigued and gives it to Cute Chick, which makes him feel great. He looks up Wiley and explains about giving a gift, then states, "You know, there's a buck to be made here". So he concocts a scheme where Wiley creates a phony tablet about an ancient legend that about giving gifts on December 26, and a character named "Sanitary Claws", that they call Santa for short. They design a look for Santa that eventually looks like our own.

The boys tell the story and get the group to vote to adopt the tradition of giving gifts in Santa's name, that they can buy trees with rocks under them from Peter and Wiley who stay up all night Dec. 24 preparing them to sell on the 25th. But Wiley is having doubts. On the morning of the 25th, Clumsy wakes up to a snorkel and goggles under a tree after dreaming Santa Came to bring it, Cute Chick has pearls, Fat Broad has boots, and Thor gets a wheel. So Peter and Wiley go back to their own caves disappointed they did not make a buck, and find that Santa brought them presents too, something they could give each other.

I am a true collector of all types of holiday movies and specials. I remember watching BC First Thanksgiving on HBO many years ago. I was able to get it on VHS and even transferred it to DVD. Only a couple of years ago did I become aware of BC A Special Christmas. I was able to get a good, used copy of it. I am glad I did. I liked it even more than the Thanksgiving special.
It has a good story to it which the Thanksgiving special was a bit lacking on. The gift selling scheme and presents purchasing scam are interesting. The real treat to the show is the ending. The references to the three wise men on their way to see the baby Jesus and the Christmas star give you that warm feeling that I like to get from a Christmas special.
I was not able to burn this VHS to DVD. It has macrovision on it. So, I only watch the video once or twice per seasons to preserve the tape. I just hope that one day that both of these specials will be released on DVD.
